Need help with my audio output!

Hi all,

I think I've tried just about everything, and I can't seem to get this to work for me. Basically, on my previous PC my default output was the back of my PC which was my headset, when I wanted to listen to music over my speakers, all I would have to do is plug them in the front of my PC (Left the cable on the floor), and the audio would automatically switch to the speakers. Soon as I unplugged the speaker cable from the front of the computer, the audio would switch back to my headset.

Now, I've built a new PC and I cant get this to work for me at all. I've tried setting default devices, etc etc but the only thing that will happen, is the audio will come out one and not the other when unplugging or plugging in the additional device. I'm pretty sure I set this up on accident on my old PC haha!

Any input would be awesome :)

Thanks guys,

Johnny

what sound card do you have?

On board

Well, I was hoping for a specific model so I could look up the features, but in general:

Yeah, the new onboard cards don't operate in this way, at least by default. On the control panel for your audio, there's a switch for if you want the front panel or the back panel audio. I'm guessing too many people complained their card didn't work because they had sound coming out of their headphones instead of their speakers. Some of the onboard cards have a different virtual card for both front and back, and some of the cards still have a setting buried in their control panels to enable the feature you mentioned.

Just a general rule, don't use the front panel plugs for headphones. Use the front speaker out on the back or get an external sound card (or AMP/DAC as I would call it) you plug in with USB as your headphone sound card. I wish they'd get rid of those ports on the front of computer cases and just let people use a front panel slot for them if they actually want them. It's just asking for whirring noises.

"Pardon my French but this is just about the most ignorant blanket statement I've ever read. And though this is the internet, I'm not even exaggerating."

Yea, I only use the front port for my speaker setup. Too lazy to go behind my computer to switch plugs. I just leave the speaker plug on the floor and when I wanted the speakers to play, I'd just plug them in the front.

There are usually settings in the audio control panel where you can set it to automatically mute the "speakers" when "headphones" are plugged in (in your case you plug them in the other way around but that doesn't matter)
Where do I find this option? I checked all the settings in the sound config under control panel. Should mention I'm on Win7

Well I don't use onbard sount. I got a x-fi titanium. Just check the settings and look for a headphone tab or something. Or provide screenshots so we can all check.

btw is it a realtek sound chip and driver?
