Video player app for Android

Go to solution Solved by LogicalDrm,

Usually I hate necroing, but this is for anyone looking similar recommendations. VLC stopped co-operating while back. No picture in main player while it shows in pop-up view. So I had to look around again.

Now I use XPlayer. UI and features are tad better than with VLC. I haven't tested whether it supports Chromecast or not. But I have another app for that, if needed.

E: Except it has ads. Not as bad as it was with MX Player.

I've used MX Player on phone for videos. Now it has got some rather annoying ads. I'm debating between getting Pro version or just switching player. One thing MX Player is missing is Chromecast support by default. I would not like to use Google's own player (whatever its called), but might check it out. I've tried VLC, but setting up library was too much work compared to what it is/would be with MX Player.

What I want

  • Easy library setup/folder selection
  • Common file types, subtitle support is plus
  • Simple UI, no need to look like consoles video store or things like that. I'm PC user by hearth, after all.
  • Chromecast support is plus, but not needed.
  • There can be banner ads in library, no full screen popups. I'm willing to pay up to €5 for Pro version (MX Pro is €5.50)

In short, Poweramp of video players.

I do. But for some reason it didn't let me only choose certain folder and then show video files in subfolders. I have folder Sync set as main and folder Floatplane under it full of mp4s. Didn't see any in library screen. And video tab was just plain confusing. I might check it again if there isn't any better suggestions.

I personally use the pro version of MX Player and I think that it's the best video player for android

Its on Android and iOS.

The stock player doesn't like to play nice with .mkv files, especially where subtitles are involved. Also, when I had my old G2, MX Player was the only way I could playback HEVC video without dropping frames as the phone lacked hardware decode support.

So there are some definite, albeit niche, use cases.

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…

I've been using Android before Google upped their game in app side. Like Google Music app is now at same level with 3rd party apps and I still would prefer Poweramp over it. I despise Samsung apps in general, and I'm not sure which app would be "stock" for the Lenovo tablet I just got (and which prompt me to make this thread).

Hey, just wanted to apologize my own stupidity. I got VLC working. UI still isn't quite to my liking, but at least I now see all files and know it wasn't software issue.

I'm syncing video files from PC and had all setup. Only thing I didn't notice was that Sync had pause on by default. Which is new feature on mobile, previously it has synced all the time. So folders were set but no files were ever moves. My own fault entirely.
