can i swap a cd drive for an ssd

my dell lattitude has a 500 gb Hybrid drive, and i have an extra 64 gigabyte i'd like to put a linux or mac distro on it, how would i go about it

IIRC laptop optical drives use a different SATA connector than regular hard drives, so you would need an adapter to use the SSD. Something like this would work. I'd take out the optical drive and see if the connector looks too small for the ssd. Here's a comparison between the two.

There are adapters on Amazon for pretty cheap. For work I have a Lenovo 440p that I did just that. Bought a Optical to Hard Drive converter from Amazon and droped in a SSD in its place for extra storage. Worked perfectly. Now I run the SSD for the OS making it much faster and the 1tb hard drive that came with it is just bulk storage now.
