I'm looking to make some reasonable upgrades to keep my PC topped up with 1080p gaming goodness. Having flip-flopped about next or PC upgrades I made a rash decision.. I purchased a Ps4, and ever since have been looking longingly at computer parts.

While I resist the urge to ebay my mistake, I was wondering if you could help me in deciding some upgrade related decisions.

My Current RIG is as such:

  • CPU: AMD phenom II x6 1090t black edition (stock clocked).
  • CPU Cooler: H80 (not the 80i).
  • GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 (stock clocked).
  • RAM: Ripjaw X something.. 2133MHz 2x4 gb.
  • Mobo: Asus Crosshair V formula (not the Z, the original).
  • SSD: 120gb OCZ agility 3.
  • HDD: WD 1tb.
  • PSU: 850W semi-modular CM silent pro.

I was looking at getting an r9 280x, the direct CU II, but given that Never Settle is actually looking worse than Nvidia's offering I'm now open to the idea of a 770 variant (I like EVGA cards).

My h80 is currently running stock fans and is noisy as fuck; even on lowest settings it's pretty unbearably loud.

My thoughts for an upgrade were as such ~£260 on a 770 and a pair of SP120 quiet editions to fit on my H80. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Looking at the NH-U14S it's really rather loud and produces very mediocre cooling, it's also not considerably less expensive than an h100i. Am I wrong?

I was looking at getting an h100i in the future and fitting it with 4 x sp120 quiets. The logic behind buying 2 now for my h80 was to prepare for the h100i, and reduce noise at the same time.

SP120's are far from quiet. Get these instead: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/arctic-cooling-case-fan-afaco120pcgba01

Other than that, getting a 770 or 280x sounds good.

It's much, much quieter than the h80 or h100i. If the u14s is rather loud, you can consider 99% of other coolers even louder.
