opinion on this file server.

i'm building a file server. 

the main focus of this system is power efficiency, so keep that in mind. it will be on 24/7. 

it will be running Ubuntu linux.

 

specs: 

 

CPU: AMD A4-4000

RAM: 8GB Corsair 1600mhz DDR3

MOBO: ASUS A88XM-E

SSD: 120GB Sandisk SSD Plus

HDD: 2x WD red 2TB

PSU: Corsair CX 550

CASE: Cooler Master Elite 342

a intel celeron would be lower power, that platform is a bit old, id get this instead

Id just boot from a usb drive, save the cost of a ssd, and more sports for hdds.

 

Id get bigger drives if you can.

 

4gb of ram is fine for this.

that ITX board only has 4 sata ports, i want expansion in the future. + the board i have now supports RAID. 

 

i don't trust running an entire OS form a usb drive. + that ssd is handy to quickly put random files on it. 

 

i don't need bigger drives for now. 

 

8gb is not that much more expensive than 4gb.

don't use raid on the board, it sucks, software raid like btrfs is much better.

 

You can always get a pcie to sata card if you need more drive.
