Yes, I have read a lot about this topic on many other forums with not enough of an answer, so I'll ask here.

I've been having an issue for the past ~4ish months about my computer abruptly shutting down. I've had to ignore it because I have not figured out what is going on.

I must fix this issue before upgrading :(. I believe it may be dodgy connections because I move my case around a lot (between homes, et cetera).

I have heard the PSU I'm using (CX500M) is not made for gaming and is 'dodgy', being made of cheaper components. Not sure.

My build:

CPU: AMD x4 860k (FM2+)

CPU Cooler: Hyper 212x

RAM: 2x 4GB ddr3

MOBO: ASUS A6HM-PLUS

GPU: ASUS GTX 750 Ti 2GB OC

PSU: CX500M

Storage: 1x250GB SSD, 1x1TB HDD (7200RPM)

Fans: 3 120mm + CPU Cooler 120mm fan + GPU fans + PSU fan

But I will upgrade to:

CPU: Ryzen 3 1300X

CPU Cooler: the stock stealth one that comes with the cpu

RAM: 2x4GB DDR4 2666Mhz

MOBO: ASUS PRIME B350-PLUS

GPU: GTX 1050 Ti

I don't believe this issue is about how much the PSU outputs as I've used online calculators.

Should I get a new, more reliable PSU or go through each cable testing connection? Maybe something else? Thanks.

How are your temps on your CPU? What are you using to monitor them with?

The CX500M isn't amazing but it doesn't appear to be the issue. If it were getting too hot it would simply restart.

The VRM on your motherboard is pretty trash. Perhaps put a fan blowing directly over the VRM (right next to those grey blocks called chokes) and see if you have the same issue.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

1) What's a VRM and what part of the motherboard is that?

2) If they're bad, I'm going to upgrade my MOBO,CPU+RAM soon so should I wait 'till I do that?

Google?

The VRM is the voltage regulation module. It determines how much voltage the CPU and other components on the board need. The VRM may be getting too hot since it's powering a quad-core chip it was never meant to power, thus you should run some air over them. You see those grey blocks on your board? Those are chokes. Try to blow air over that general direction. The chokes don't need the cooling but the VRM is right next to the chokes.

To 2. You probably want to upgrade now if you're having problems AND could get a better system, but a 1300X isn't much of an upgrade. A 1400 would be a better buy. I don't know your financial situation though.

I don't know why I said 'What's a VRM', I already knew from google. are those grey blocks labelled R68 or 1R2 in a vertical line of 5? I chose the 1300X as it's what I can afford.

Sometimes my system abruptly shut down when I finished gaming on a CPU-intensive game as I went to youtube to watch something.

I haven't 'recorded' what has been happening at the time of shut-down (now do). I can remember it shutting down while gaming before.

The VRM's overheating would make sense.

Yes, those are chokes. It looks like, on your board, to the left are the little components you need to cool. So blow a fan just over them, see if your problems go away,

How do I get a fan to blow air on them? I have an exhaust to their left and air is being pushed through my CPU cooler on their right (but the fan is on the right of the cooler).

You plug a fan in and suspend it in some way that allows air to go over them.

I have no clue how to do that, but I'll be upgrading soon so it shouldn't be an issue. The weird thing is the 'shutting down' started when I haven't even upgraded components. I figured it was some dodgy connections.

OK, look, I can't hold your hand through everything. Plug a fan in, sit it on top of the chokes someone. Use zipties to tie it to your case. Maybe take the motherboard out of the case. Just lift a finger....

I'll try it. Thanks

  • 2 weeks later...

After a while, I compiled a list of 'things that were happening when my pc dies', and it led me to believe that it's nothing to do with the VRM's.
browsing youtube
taking '4x resolution' Minecraft screenshot that says "uses more memory"
minecraft open in background + server and browsing web
literally just started the pc and went to chrome
playing Minecraft and browsing the web
was browsing forums, barely started pc

A lot of these are internet-related, which baffled me. Could this be an issue with my USB Wifi adapter?
Model: TPLink AC600 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter

Yes, this is a necro.
