Okay so, what is Optimus limited to? I haven't really noticed any 1070-equipped laptops with that power saving feature, so would I be stuck to only a 1060 if that were the case?

I really don't want to give up decent on-the-go battery life for day to day stuff... but if it's literally one or the other, the 1060 is still a VERY potent step-up for me in terms of firepower... I'd just like to be able to crank up the settings a bit better if possible, and the 1070 can easily manage that. o~o

Optimus don't support gsync and has micro shutter issue with Pascal GPUs in laptops. There are laptops with 1070 and without gsync, for instance some Alienware 15/17 models (good battery life) as well as MSI GE Raider (battery life still sucks).

Edit: there's also laptops with 1070+gsync and good battery life

I don't care about Gsync. It's just more reason to charge another $250 on something that legitimately doesn't cost them a penny more to implement. :P

Alright so, since I'm regulated to 1060s if I want a guaranteed good battery life setup going... What's the best option for me as far as a gaming machine goes?

I'll be pulling from whatever student loans/Pell Grants that I get from School to make the purchase since I want a reliable, powerful and good investment going into school. This Inspiron has done its duty in my eyes and I really just need something with more firepower going forward.

Budget will be around $2000 at the upper limit given the estimations of what I'm going to be getting.

Ahh... yeah... I realized that too late myself. xD

I'm in the United States.

I'm not finicky when it comes to specs, but the new Coffee Lake stuff is coming out, or going to available next month this time, and I wouldn't mind grabbing one of the newer 8750H CPUs in a laptop. Probably at least a 1060, I'd think?

I'm the type of person that would rather take a $1300 laptop and spec it to cost around $2000 with weaker hardware, because a snappier, well-rounded, fast-in-all-areas machine is more powerful in the long run than compared to one that's essentially a super CPU, super GPU and a slow HDD... if that makes sense?

So, requirements...

6-core i7

16GB RAM

1060

All-SSD storage (if possible)

Good battery life

Does it have to be thin?

Some of the newer 8750H laptops seem quite tempting, though many are at the very tippy top of your budget, and some run quite warm.

The 7559 isn't really considered a 'thin and light' notebook simply because it's got the sort-of-thin, thing going on, but it's very much not light at all. It was noted for being exceptionally heavy for its size. (I'm overly analytical about things by the by...)

It doesn't have to be thin, but I would prefer to stray away from the typical idea of a true DTR machine. If I have to open it up after I've requested (and paid) for a thermal repaste, I'll be upset. :S

Wait for new Dell G3/G5/G7 or new Alienware 15 no gsync. Really, need to wait for more options to come.

I would hang on a few more months and get a 6 Core i7 with one of the new Nvidia GPUs. Your current laptop is in no means a potato, unless this is for HEAVY duty rendering and stuff where you NEED the hardware waiting it out will give more for the money and also be able to spending more/ use less loan money

That's an F in the profile pic

Yeah I was planning on waiting for sure. The only thing is that I'd like to acquire a Clevo laptop for once. I've only ever told others of how good they are, given reviews and the like.

@HTWingNut

Any chance you'll be reviewing any of the soon-to-come Clevo N850EP6? :D I tend to ignore most of the reviews on Notebookcheck save for the thermals and the like. Yours are always 10x as in-depth and are typically geared to the normal folk, rather than pandering to a certain crowd.

Thermals aren't great in N850 (discussed on this topic a few days ago), might need to wait for P650. Or go for N950TP6.
