Hi,

I recently got a mini ITX board for my i5-8600k, a Gigabyte Z370N. Upon finding out my VRM cooler is a massive piece of garbage, I got two Noctua NF-a4x10 fans to attempt to remedy the issue. While it lowered idle temps by as much as 10C, it still throttles like mad after about a half an hour of gaming. Temperatures idle at about 86C and after a half an hour are up to 114C. I would like to know if either getting a better VRM cooler would be better, or if I should just return my board and get a different one? I intend to get a stable 4.9GHz overclock but am unable to do so with the state of these VRMs. I have attached a photo of the board's factory cooler, and a photo of the Enzotech MOS-C10 copper cooler pieces that I would probably get if I do upgrade. Im not sure if they're any better, as they're typically an upgrade from literally nothing, but I'd rather get feedback from somewhere before I go and void my warranty by swapping out coolers. Thank you for your time.

I personally would just get a different board.

Out of curiosity, why?  Other than the onboard video, I don't see a big problem with this mobo.

Just a thing with me, I guess.

I don't like to tamper with things on the motherboard, maybe. I really don't know.

No problem, I was just curios although I have to admit that I wouldn't be happy with the video setup.  IMHO, I think that onboard video is a mistake.  Yea, back in the day it was the only thing, but now with video cards being what they are, you will get much better results with a video card then you will with onboard video.  IMHO is all and everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and beliefs.

Onboard video as in having video-out ports on the mainboard? I don't see a problem with those at all, it makes troubleshooting a lot easier.

Not really a problem, just something that I would rather avoid with a regular video card.  Onboard video "can" use a significant amount of mobo resources so for me that is just something I would rather avoid.  Nothing more, nothing less.  A video card is just my personal preference over onboard video.  Like I said above, " IMHO is all and everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and beliefs."

AFAIK VRM cooling is not linked to any kind of thermal throttling. What CPU cooler are you running?

VRM temp, or CPU temp? Labeling your temps would go far to disambiguate your post.

If they get too hot they can’t supply the right amount of voltage

Thermal throttling is the act of the motherbpoard actively downclocking the CPU to lower CPU temps. Again, AFAIK no motherboard actively downclocks the CPU to lower VRM temps. Most VRMs dont even have a temp sensor.

You don’t need software for higher resistance to = lower voltage...

That's an F in the profile pic

Yes, but that is not thermal throttling.

if i vrm gets too hot its shuts down. it will not throttle the cpu. also if its reading 114c then its not cpu temps because the cpu would shut down long before then.
