I've started work on a build for a dedicated 2nd PC for streaming and encoding.

I have an Asrock Extreme4 X79 board and an R9 280x so far.  The plan is to put in 16 or 32GB of DDR3 and either an i7-3960x or e5-2670.

Has anyone built anything close to this on older hardware, and what were your experiences?

I figure since I already have part of it, I may as well finish it out! :)

Just get whatever has the most cores with a decent clock speed. You only need 16GBs of RAM at most

are you just going to toss in an HD 60 pro?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I have an HD 60S breakout box, so will be using that, since I'll be doing streaming from either the main PC or a console. I know I could do the Pro one, but I already have the S.

Off topic here, but I wonder if a Xeon Phi would be good for an external stream box.  Even if it would be impractical due to the price.

You'd be better off just replacing your main system with a 1950X
