Hey guys so I'm currently doing an IST assignment and i was wondering if you guys could give me a list of hardware/ software which will be essential for networking  supoermarket. I would prefer if you can get the products/ components from Australian based stores. This is the specifications for the supermarket.

Scenario 4: Supermarket

Employees: 1 store manager, 1 assistant manager, 4 register operators, 3 customer service staff, 1 stores/dock manager, 5 stores/prep workers

Specific requirements: complete wifi access across the store to assist in management and immediate/direct customer service connecting to stores and stock information, a server (separate to all other terminals/workstations), a private connection to their suppliers

Considerations: please consider the emphasis on customer service and ‘at the finger tips’ information availability, and theft of stock

Thank you guys for your time, I would really appreciate if you guys can help me with this :)

This is your high school assignment?

Seems to me you should be doing your homework, not fobbing it off on the forum.

But having said that, start with the following:

A RedHat Server (doesn't matter the model, but the Dell PowerEdge servers are great) for your backend. RedHat Linux so you get their support contract for when things go wrong.

A Cisco switch for general hardwired networking within the building.

A Pix firewall/VPN for security and access to the supplier(s) servers.

A set of Dell ThinClients/dumb terminals for the cash registers

A Cisco wifi unit for coverage within the store.

Wifi security cams sprinkled about the building to watch for shrinkage events.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Holy, thanks :) I’d need to use a modem though right?  And which is better for commercial use, CAT5 or CAT6?

Depends on the connectivity to the internet or backhaul to corporate HQ but in most cases, no, you'll get connectivity via fiber to the stores

Cat5e minimum or Cat6 if you want to future proof it a bit. Cat6A if it will be running it next to a lot of power lines.
