Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

Just browsing thru the options, etc., for my mobo (Asus TUF Sabertooth 990FX 3.0) and one of the things listed is something called a Trusted Platform Module or TPM.  Just what is a TPM in laymans terms and would it help the security of my system by installing one.  And if it does, how do I go about choosing the one for my system?

stores keys for encryption. Used for things like bitlocker. If you don't know what it does, you don't need it.
