First Time Overclocking : Core Clock Stuck?

talk about an enthusiast board for for LN2 overclocking :)

Lololololololololololololololololol!

It's my first time overclocking

I'm running

Intel 6700k

Z270 Maximus IX Apex

16 Gigs of RAM

1060 6GB

So far, I've been able to hit 4.6Ghz on my chip, but for some reason the Multiplier is stuck at x46.

BLCK is 100, and all I'm doing is changing the multiplier, and trying to fine tune the voltage.

This is what CPU-Z is reporting, if you look to the bottom left corner where it says multiplier it's 46. In the bios I have it as 48.

image.png.9389e834dd1080a087654f7f537cd32a.png

Any clues as to why?

I've tried using Load Optimized defaults, and redoing everything from there.

Resetted CMOS with the button on the back of my mobo.

I can retry resetting CMOS, and etc. if needed. Toss me any suggestions. :)

Possibly not enough voltage, leading the multiplier to lower itself upon boot?

Are you sure you selected "Save and Exit" upon leaving BIOS? Did the PC restart when this happened? It should have. Reboots are necessary upon any changes.

Should be on the 6700K, but I did just update my last post. Did it successfully restart upon saving and exiting? If not, try again, and when it reboots, be sure to enter setup to see if your settings have taken effect.

Yes it did successfully restart, I'd save and exit, then load into Windows, and check the clocks. Still showing 4.6Ghz. I can try again just to make sure.

Restart and head into BIOS first, see if your settings are "sticking". Always important to interrupt boot every time you make changes to double check settings before booting into Windows. So the order is: Restart>BIOS>Make Changes>Save & Exit>BIOS>Windows

Depending on the quality of yours it might not be enough. Mine needs 1.4 just for 4.6, though granted my psu and mobo are eh and I have a really early 6700k. However, it should still go above 4.6

The interesting part is you can see the multiple range is up to 49 yet it stays at 46. Do you perhaps have some setting so that the 1 core OC is higher or something? Does it ever go above 4.6?

I just tried that, the settings stuck, but upon  checking CPU-Z, I still get the same multiplier. I just did voltages, and it's set to 1.3 right now, running at 4.6Ghz still.

Edit : @DocSwag yeah, when I had checked BIOS, my multiplier was actually at 49, but even before that, and now, it was 48. Still resulting in 4.6Ghz. My settings are to sync all the cores, so all cores would run at 4.8Ghz. I don't remember if I ever got it to go above 4.7. I think with ASUS auto tuning, it might've, but not too sure. If I set the multiplier to 50 it just doesn't post, and wants me to reset CMOS.

@KaireFeare as @DocSwag states here, if you lost the silicon lottery, you may yet need more voltage. But it is in fact weird that it doesn't just run at x49 and then just crash upon testing rather than just not showing up at all.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you. I tried 49 before, and it would also just crash, but when I set 48 or 49 now, it runs through with it, but in reality it's only running at 4.6.

I can try to hit the voltage to 1.37 and see if anything changes.

Do that, maybe some weird protection is preventing boot at x49 with that voltage.

Same thing is occurring, 1.37, but still x46. Task Manager is reporting 4.6, CPUZ, HWInfo, and CAM from NZXT. So it's not a CPUZ issue.

Edit : @DocSwag I've tried updating my bios before, and that didn't go so well. BIOS versions are the same, but different dates. ASUS websites shows sometime this year, while the BIOS on the board shows December of 2017 iirc.

Are these clock speeds you're hitting when you load up the cpu? If so, what programs are you using to load the cpu?

Just tried flashing bios, no good, it just gives me an error code. And yes those are the clockspeeds I'm hitting when putting a load on the CPU. Prime95, and Cinebench R15. I've tried playing games, Fortnite for one and it seemed stable, no crashes.

Well Ive seen people download Z370 versions of BIOS for Z270 boards and vise versa. With all the letters and numbers specifically with Intel, this is an easy mistake to make. I would try again and before pressing the download button, make sure that EVERY SINGLE letter and number on the download page MATCHES your motherboard EXACTLY

Could you try using AIDA64? When you do it, try it stressing CPU and FPU as well as stressing just CPU, and see if there's any difference.

The only way for the PC to correctly boot after the Bios fail is to clear CMOS, then it seems to resume. I just go to the the Maximus 9 Apex page on Asus and take the latest download from there. Version 1203 download, and it's the same thing on the board.

Oh this is why you are getting this error, if you already have 1203 then it cant update to the same thing so it will error out, so BIOS update isn't the issue

My internet is being quite the pain and is saying an hour to download a 49 MB file...

Edit : Just aida64's download servers being trash.

Stressing CPU and FPU, still stuck at 4.6.

Stressing CPU only also is stuck at 4.6.

Lol mines just trash right now due to having just installed my new SSD an hour ago and Steam currently downloading 25 games, so I kinda did it to myself ;)

Mhm, I feel you. Having that many games queue'd up, and it's taking up all the bandwidth.
