Will a usb 3 extension work?

I live in a college dorm that won't allow us to use ethernet cables for our computers, therefore I have to use an external usb 3.0 wifi adapter. However this does not work very well as most games have high ping and sometimes I cant get websites to load. I am thinking this is because I am quite far from the wireless access point. Now to my question, if I were to get a long usb 3.0 extension cable (~20 feet) would this create any latency issues or any other issues? Or would it even work at all? 

 

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!
