Guess should start with some background information. I mostly use my computer for gaming (CS:GO so not very demanding) and a small amount of photo / video editing. My current system is getting a bit older now and I would like to upgrade but don't want to spend much money at the moment. Going to take my old hardware as I start replacing it and use it to build a small home server.

Current specs are:

Core i7 4770k (Overclocked to 4.6GHZ)

H100i Watercooler

16GB GSkill DDR3 (Overclocked slightly)

Gigabyte Z87N-WIFI motherboard

Gigabyte N760-OC 2GD (GTX 760 Windforce) video card (overclocked about 10%

NZXT S340 Elite Case (first new part, still have older bit fenix case kicking around for my server build)

Corsair neutron 256 GB SSD

1 TB western digital drive

I am wanting to upgrade to Ryzen CPU and a new video card eventually. Would you suggest a new motherboard and CPU first? or upgrade the GPU first. More leaning towards a AMD gpu as well since my monitor is freesync capable but not gsync.

How competive is the 4770k now compared to a new ryzen CPU? how does the 760 OC stack up compared to say a new rx580 or vega 56?

Thanks,

Richard

The only thing in your system that probably needs a upgrade (and not necessarily required if you just play CS:GO) is the 2 GB 760.Gaming-wise,a 4770k is good enough to even take a 1080ti without bottlenecks though more cores = more fps in CS:GO.A 2 GB 760 is basically a GTX 1050,though if you decide to play any newer titles, the 2 GB VRAM of the 760 will be at 100% VRAM usage in newer AAA games.I would say that you wait and get a GPU upgrade(so you dont waste $500+ on a freakin 580).However if you don't want to wait or waste your money on 1060's/580's right now,and really wanna upgrade something, get a Ryzen and a B350 (if you dont plan to SLI) motherboard (X370 if you want to SLI).For gaming only, you really only need a R5 1600 at the most, though your 4770k may outperform it in gaming, but the 1600 has more cores and also keep in mind intel is always more expensive but better in gaming. For more CPU intensive tasks, get a R7 1700 at the most because because the 1700x and 1800x are just a overclocked, expensive version of a 1700,when you can easily overclock a 1700 to match a 1800x.For a motherboard I recommend a ASUS motherboard, because they are durable (i mean wont die in a short period of time),I have a PRIME B350M-A myself, recieve regular BIOS updates, and for the more expensive strix motherboard, you get more features.Gigabyte boards are also good.I wont ever recommend a MSI board, though if you like it,its your money spent and your pc,so yeah.

If you want the most performance short term I would upgrade the GPU. But the GPU market is in a mess at the moment. I go would for a long term investment in the Ryzen. Wait for ryzen 2nd generation and get the R5 2600 and a B350 or B450 motherboard (the difference between the two chipsets is going to be very little). The investment in the Ryzen platform will last to 2019 as Ryzen 2 will be compatible with AM4. Get a cheap stick of 8GB of DDR4 for gaming (high-ish Mhz if possible) and upgrade to another stick when maybe the market dies down a bit. I would wait till the GPU market dies down too then buy an RX480/580 8GB when they go cheap after the mining craze dies down.

For used deals , I'd recommend a 780ti or a 980ti,and AMD wise,a R9 Fury X (yes I'm telling this one,but its basically 1070 performance for less than 1060 3 GB price ATM)

Its 2020,not 2019 for AMD Ryzen CPU's.Yes the GPU market is a mess at the moment, currently a used GPU is the way to go.I also don't think that AMD will release B450 boards anytime soon.Neither do I think that Ryzen 2 will be the last generation.

Yeah sorry 2020. But even the used GPU market is a mess. Everything high end enough to mine is at much higher prices.

You can easily get a 980ti for around 300ish USD.AFAIK its a bit faster than a 1060,for even cheaper. And there is a Fury X 4 GB auction on ebay with 3 days remaining and its currently at 94$,if he pulls the trigger on the bid on the correct time,he could get it for 200 or below.

Well in my opinion the 4770K is still a very good processor, and regarding the fact, that you're only doing a small amount of photo/video editing, there would be no need to upgrade the CPU. If you're only playing csgo, i will go with an slightly better GPU and postpone upgrading your CPU.

I do not know how important your small home server project is, but you could buy some cheap parts like an Xeon or i3/i5 and a bit RAM and then put your old GPU in there.

Answering the Question with the RX580 or Vega 56, i would go for the RX850 if you want an AMD GPU and an 1060 for an NVIDIA GPU.

Both GPU's have an similar performance, and here in the EU the 1060 is way cheaper, but has "only" 6GB VRAM compared to the 8GB VRAM Version of the RX580.

If you are really into "upgrading" you CPU to an Ryzen, you should wait a bit, cause the Ryzen 2000 gen is launched at the moment, and the "first" gen is already dropping in price.

i7-6850K, ASRock X99 Taichi, 32 GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4 3000Mhz CL15, 2x EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3 SLI, some SSD's/HDD's, EVGA G2 1300W PSU,

quite a few Coldzero Parts ... all inside an Corsair Obsidian 900D - detailled information on my Profil

u wrote RX850.... anyway yeah Ryzen 1xxx prices will drop down due to Ryzen 2xxx but thing is-Ryzen 2 has higher IPC.Also 6 GB VRAM is plenty enough for probably the next 5 years or so

Yeah that should be RX580 of course, and yes 6GB VRAM could be enough for 1080p 5 Years. But raytracing is an interesting topic atm and got implemented in directx recently and normally i would say, yes 6gb are enough, but i do not want to predict the evolution of GPU in the next 5 years regarding new techniques.

A 980ti costs around $420 now.... https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_sop=15&_nkw=980ti&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1 . 780ti doesn't perform very well at all:

An old video but Nvidia never does big performance driver updates for old cards really, no much would have changed. The RX480/580 keeps getting many performance driver updates, I have one I would really recommend buying one when the market dies down.

A 980ti is still well supported. And im talking about a USED 980ti,not a new one, just look it up on ebay us.

The RX480/580 is definitely the best option at similar prices over the 1060 6GB. AMD has a lot better driver support for older cards and current cards than Nvidia.

First part, agreed. Second part disagreed, i had a lot of graphics cards, and amd definetly hasnt a "lot better driver support for older cards and current cards than Nvidia".

In my experience thats just not true.

the first part is the one i disagree......the rx 580 is only slightly faster than a 1060 and has more VRAM.And I never see the prices being SAME anytime soon.Anyway volta ampere will be coming out soon and may balance the gpu thing again.

yeah i do know that, but he wrote "best option at similar prices", and like i wrote earlier the 1060 is mostly much cheaper at similar performance, so i would agree to pick an RX580 if the price would be similar, but it isnt, and thats why i would pick an 1060 over an rx580, but OP "preferred" an amd card

Still I would wait for the GPU market to die down. When people start selling used cryptomining cards. Unless he needs it as quick as possible I would wait. I would definitely buy Ryzen for the long term investment.

I would say I will hold off on CPU / Mobo until Ryzen 2 if thats not to far away.

It's like a few weeks away. I'm pretty sure it is next month. Buy a Vega 56 if you can and make sure to undervolt it. It can actually improve clocks is some cases.

They didn't have great driver support before but they really have fixed that now. Massive performance gains in some cases and their finewine technology too is great.

Sounds good, i will keep an eye on that in the next years with DX12, but right now, in my opinion, Nvidia has no real high end gaming competitor to accelerate GPU development or lower their prices. AMD is like an low-mid range Graphics card producer, which is not interesting for me.
