Video editor - upgrade or all new?

So a few years ago I bought and built a pretty beefy computer speaking of my economical situation, and actually it still serves me pretty good, it's nothing about it(except the GPU) I really feel thats making my life hard.
But there is one thing, the ultra slow-motion shots from the GoPro Hero 6 has the h.265 files and those my system cant handle..
I edit in Vegas Pro 15, and most of the time as I told I'm actually quite satisfied with the job it does..
Therefore I now think that it's a shame that the h.265 alone is forcing me to build a whole new system just to handle those files, or do I have to build the whole system from ground up..? I dont have a clue, I've just been reading that my CPU is too old for the task, WHYYY!!?? :P
Hope you guys can give me a hint about what I should do here, I would love to spend as few bucks as possible on this build, but I do see that I'm gonna bleed a little here..

Here's my system today:

HK: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO/THUNDERBOLT
CPU: Intel Core i7 3770K Ivy Bridge

RAM: Corsair 32 GB med DDR3 1866MHz (4X8)

I would defiantly upgrade your graphics card. The GTX 1060 performs 96% better and is relatively cheap. Here is a comparison: http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=671&gid2=3681&compare=AMD Radeon HD 7950-vs-Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 6GB I would also recommend a i7-8700k. It is 68% better also. Here is a link to that: http://www.game-debate.com/cpu/index.php?pid=924&pid2=2515&compare=Intel Core i7-3770K 4-Core 3.5GHz-vs-Intel Core i7-8700 6-Core 3.2GHz Overall I think upgrading is a better solution then just building a new system. Good luck!

Would that CPU fit my motherboard? I thought my mobo would be a showstopper for any significant upgrade..

Yeah tha gpu was planned upgrading anyway soon, I'm looking for used 1050/1060/1070 at the time, but there's not much used stuff in that range at this time here in Norway.

Just wait for prices to drop and get a used 980ti or one of the new fangled ones that are coming out

When will the new generation gpu's arrive? Then there may be something useful used hw to get my hands on..

The 20 series should be coming out in April I've heard. It probably would be a good idea to wait until then because people will want the latest and greatest hardware to game on.

Your system is fine, Vegas pro is just a slow program.

For h265 rendering i never used the build in rendering engine.

I always render with h264 first and then convert it with Handbrake.

I even rerender any h264 videos with it just to save more bytes.

You may want to switch to premiere.

I used to be a vegas guy for years, till i had enough.

The software just doesn't improve in many years.

Even after magix bought it from sony, the changes are miniscule.

Render is slow and hardware acceleration is kinda jaggy.

It's a very easy program to master, but for more serious work, try adobe, finalcut or davinci.

So I need at least Kaby lake to handle the h.265. Is that right?

The best CPU I could find that fits your motherboard is an i7-3770K. Here is a link: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/7KjG3C/intel-cpu-bx80637i73770k Sorry I forgot to check. Good luck!

But isnt that the same as the one I allready got..?

You convert from 265 to 264 with handbreake before edit?

I've tried premiere, I just find it harder to get around.. I think I'm getting too old to learn new tricks..

It is. Sorry I am just tried today. I am actually dumb lol. You could get a motherboard that supports better processors but a better solution would be getting Final Cut Pro I think. SupaKomputa also recommends a new editor. Final Cut Pro takes up less power and system resources than Sony Vegas. Good luck!

No i render in 264 first then i convert it to 265.

I always use handbrake as a final render, especially for uploading to youtube.

Yes coming from vegas, working with premiere is a bit wierd at first.

I've been trying to learn it for the past 10 years, people said its easy, but for me vegas is easier and more effective.

I don't understand the logic of premiere workspace, so it never gets my full attention.

Until i got a more serious project with lots of greenscreen and not so good voice overs.

I was forced to use Adobe Audition for its superior noise reduction compared to soundforge.

For the greenscreen After effect is the best, vegas is just rubbish, premiere is in the middle.

So i focus myself in learning premiere, and now i loved it. Cannot go back to vegas.

The adobe ecosystem worked seamlessly, really enjoyed it.

Small tip for premiere, use keyboard shortcut a lot.

After you mastered the shortcuts, it would be as fast as working with vegas, if not faster.

this video may help:

Final cut pro is for MAC only.

  • 4 months later...

I'm sorry for reviving this old thread, but it all of a sudden became very relevant..

Would the 1070ti Cerberus be a good choice?
An online shop over here is having a pretty good offer on these cards now, so I would love if anyone could give a swift reply on if it's a good choice for video editing..

I may upgrade the rest of the system next year or so, but then the 1070ti could still keep up for quite a while, right?
