is a NH-d15s enough for a i7-7820x

gamerking

im upgrading from a 5820k to a 7820x , i got myself a x299 gaming 7 gigabyte board , i plan on OC'ing the 8 core cpu either with automatic at first or might do manual OC.

is a nh-d15s enough for the cpu ? without a OC i think its fine .im wanting to know with a OC , like anyone else who has the same chip or the 10 core ect if they have used a tower cooler .

i got the 140mm fan that came with it and  its either a 2400/3000 rpm ek vardar 120mm on the front of the tower cooler , set to min 45% pwm . i know the x299 cpu's run hotter then my x99 one , i do have a h115i corsair AIO but i was having temp issue with it on my x99 board . thats why i got the tower cooler , AIO wouldn't stay at a good idle temp for more then a week . never figured out if it was the board having some issue with the mount of the AIO or it was the AIO already dieing , its not even 9 months old was a RMA replacement for my h110i when it died . (was brand new the cooler above .ant a refurb). idle with the tower atm is in the low 30's c and 100% load high 50's low 60's @ 4.3ghz 1.25v .

if the tower cooler wont do any suggestions i will take , i rather stay away from AIO's if possible . i do have my old 2011 custom loop parts but i know i would need a block upgrade

Unless the block is sub-par you don't need to change it, 1366, 2011, 2011 v3 and 2066 all use the same mounts.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

its a very old block from EK i know with 2011-v3 they released a new one with a different flow plate options for different cpu's/sockets i think whats it called, the old version i have cant have its insides swap'd , rather not flush everything out to find out my temps are bad due to the old block .

Try using the nh-d15, it it doesn't work out I can very strongly recommend picking up a heatkiller pro IV

well my h115i is about 90% dead it cooled the cpu for awhile once it got to a stable temp after a hour the cooler then called it quits time to go make a new RMA with @corsair  . the d15 is a great cooler but this chip is a decent overlocker , 1.29v @ 4.7ghz , all cores but the temps are arnt useable . 100c within 5 mins of any stress . avx512 are insta throttle . atm left it at stock the chip boosts to 4.3ghz which the tower cooler can cool no problem . i looked at the watercool block its too much to get it to me , 90$ + tax and shipping , cheaper to buy it from modmymods or performancepcs

You can get a heatkiller pro IV basic for $60 on performance pcs, $70 for a pro

May want to think about sending it to Silicon Lottery to have it delidded.  They did mine and I run mine 4.8ghz @ 1.285v.  Here are mine after 12hrs of prime95 using a 115i AIO...hottest core was 82c.

this AIO killed my 5820k so i didn't have any hope for it . do you know how to stop "current limit throttling" in Intel extreme tuning utility , doing it my self the OC i cant find the setting that needs to bump'd up it, it ant vcore. i know when i had the MB do the OC it set something stupid high 3k watts max for the CPU , vcore of 1.29v and a few other things. but it got rid of the current limit throttle since it was thermaling at that point   . i may delid it , want to make sure it runs good first and then , i may get a mono block since my board supports it , if i do then ill delid either buy the kit or find someone who knows how to do it .

Why did you bring up the worst price as a reason to avoid it?

no , i just dont like performance pcs (they scam rate shipping rates) and modmymods is out of stock on the watercool Copper blocks sadly  , so amazon is my first choice , if i could but they arnt cheap . if i end up doing a custom loop its Monoblock and GPU blocks then i need more then a 360 and i fall back into the rabbit hole i was in for my x79 system.

I used a Noctua tower fan on my 5820k. It ran nice and cool. But only did a low overclock (4ghz from memory). Got to mid 50 degrees but nothing higher.

I just recently built a new PC with a 7820x. Cooling this with a H115i. By just adjusting the CPU multipliers and not touching voltage or any other settings, I have it running stable at 4.6ghz. Have not seen any of the cores go above 45 degrees under load.

I suspect it could clock higher but would require more involved OC process which I am not familiar with and haven't had the time to look into properly. Very happy with the CPU and the H115i.

Gotcha, I really don't know what else you can do.  You already have the king of aircooling, have you delidded?

no not yet , need to buy a delidding tool since i dont want to do it free hand with a vice . cant for the life of me find the setting  in the Bios to get rid of this current limit throttling that intel extreme utility is saying is happening anytime i max the cpu to 100% . i found it in the windows OC software but not in bios . gigabyte hasn't responded when i sent them a ticket sent it 4 day ago now .
