Just got new i7 8700k to replace my i5 8600k. I am using a Cryorig C1 cooler. I have read about other builds using similar or worse coolers and I figured this would be fine. After about an hour of putting my machine together, I load up windows and HWMonitor to see that my temps are easily 85-95-100c just from basic windows loading. Obviously this is not acceptable and even using my overclocked i5 8600k I did not see such horrible temperatures.

What is going wrong here? The TDP of the chips is the same.. Did I miss something?

___________

Update. In my rush to get this build completed and in my exhausted state, I didn't want to apply too much pressure to the board via the CPU mounting. I have since screwed the cooler down tighter and my max CPU temp is below 80c after running ASUS Realbench (a GPU and CPU stress tester). I am undervolted to 1.1v on an all core 4.3ghz overclock). Things are looking good!

did you remove the protective covering from the cooler base plate before mounting it?

then it sounds like either A) bad mounting, or B) Bad software reading. I would put my money on bad mounting of the cooler.

Could be the thermal paste application/mount, if there is an air bubble or not enough paste the transfer would be bad enough to spike temps simply from booting

It seems to be mounted properly. If I press down on the cooler with my hands and watch the temps, it seems the same.

There is a tad bit more than a pea sized amount on the IHS

Yes

based on the information provided my conclusion is that A) the protection for the base plate is still on or B) bad mounting. Take it off and re-mount it.

I had used this cooler for 5 months on my i5 8600k with no problems. I have long since removed it.

UPDATE. This is going to sound extremely stupid, but I removed my fan from the CPU cooler and re-tightened it. I am now getting better temperatures than I did on my i5 8600k. I am not sure why this is, but perhaps the cooler was never quite mounted properly

Yeah things often are looser than people realize, at least it works now :)

I think I must have screwed something up (no pun intended) when I initially mounted this cooler. Now that it is much tighter, I have shaved off about 8c from my i5 8600k at the very same stress test... Thank YOU and thank you @legacy99. Been a long day at work and freaked out when I saw that my incredibly tightly packed PC wasn't working!

So far it is working very well!

No problems :) Wasn't trying to sound confrontational or anything. Sorry if I came across that way, but glad you were able to fix it with the remount!
