Resolution vs Refresh rate

I'm planning to upgrade from a 1080p 60Hz monitor in the coming months. What I really want is a 1440p (undetermined Hz but something above 60) monitor. But it seems I can't find something fits that at the price I can afford. So my question is should I go for a 1080p 144hz or a 1440p 60Hz?

 

The collection of games I play is varied from single player to fps to esport. So with my ideal monitor I wanted to be able turn up the resolution (on single player games) and sacrifice some frames for the look, but then for more multiplayer games, just drop the resolution to pump out more frames.

I'd go 1440p hands down. Resolution is the best thing ever.

The problem is modern games having too much drawcalls, meaning you can't really get it on high framerates. It's more stable aiming for high-res 60 than lower-res 144hz.

Why high refreshrate monitors look better even without Freesync/G-sync in one image.
Stutters, framedrops, "lag". How to provide detailed information with your "bottleneck" question, as well as a few solutions.
