Hey, any one here with this SSHD: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178995&cm_re=firecuda-_-22-178-995-_-Product 1 or 2 tb?

If so, how long is the boot times? I understand they could improve over time so it might not be a good representation of a new drive but still. How fluid is navigating threw windows? If you open the windows search tab in the bottom left, and type something really fast like "pointer" does the "change how fast your curser moves" option appear fast?

Anyone with this hard drive or similar: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CbL7YJ/seagate-barracuda-2tb-35-7200rpm-internal-hard-drive-st2000dm006

If both are inadequate, what would you guys recommend? I don't care about capacity much, just gotta be 1 tb or higher, and 7200 rpm.

Are you putting Windows on a mechanical drive? I'd recommend a small SSD and a 2TB HDD. SSHDs don't make much sense.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

yes, the OS will go in the drive.  I don't have a big budget for this project, and the pc is limited to sata 2.

I had a SSHD in a laptop a few years ago and... It felt like a regular HDD.  For $100 you can get ~120Gb SSD and a 1Tb HDD.

Sata 2? Just get a cheap HDD-the rest of the PC probably isn't worth putting too much money into.

SSHDs suck, don't waste your money on them unless you need a large storage drive for a laptop with only one drive bay and cannot afford a large SSD.

Get a separate SSD+HDD, or stick to a single good quality HDD and add an SSD in the future.

so the HDD I listed is fine? The system is an optiplex 745. I will replace the CPU with the Core 2 Quad 6700, put 8 gigs of quad channel ddr2 @ 800 mhz. will also put either a gt 1030 or gtx 1050 low profile.

I have a barracuda pro 2 tb in a system I built earlier this year and I like it, but this is for a system that is slightly over 10 years old. As I said above, I will upgrade it quite a bit but the HDD it came with is a mere 80 gig hard drive with 16 mb of cache. Should I buy a barracuda pro for it?

If it's Windows 8 or 10, then the Fast Boot option (assuming you shut down) makes this something of a moot point. Otherwise, it may help lower boot times, but I can't say for sure by how much. It depends on what else the SSHD thinks is important to keep in cache. As far as everything else, it's about the same as having an HDD.

If it helps, SSHDs are like HDDs with a bigger, non-volatile cache. Things only speed up if you use them often enough for the drive to keep them in the SSD part.

So? An SSD will still be light years faster. i know because I've used SSDs in OptiPlex 330's, 755's and 780's. It doesn't make sense to get an SSHD. Get an SSD+HDD and you'll be far happier.

Ah, I see. The 8 gb and flash capacity also had me worried about it's lifespan. I think I will go for the regular hard drive I listed or the Baracuda pro 2 tb.

I don't want to spend over 250 dollars in my optiplex 745. Here is my plan: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QHBLD2

Then could you step down to 1TB? Believe me, if you’re running Windows 10 on a machine like this, you will want a solid state drive.

I don't mind waiting a while, I just don't want the system to run like garbage and be bottlenecked by the storage drive. I've had to experience windows 7 on a 3.5 5400 rpm 16 mb cache hard drive from a prebuilt I took apart, and a slower 2.5 5400 rpm 64 mb cache hard drive in a HP laptop I owned for a while. I honestly have no desire to invest in an ssd for such an old system. I fell I'd be fine with a good hard drive, but I was not sure whether to go with a regular HDD to SSHD, but I guess I will go for the HDD.

In the past I purchased two different drives for comparison purposes (I needed the storage for two different computers, but couldn't decide so went one of each).

One was a 4TB Seagate SSHD. The other was a 4TB WD Black HDD.

Both give about the same performance, however the Black drive is more consistent. Based off that, if I had to buy more, I would simply go the WD Black. Nice and fast mechanical drive for storage.
