Is This a good motherboard?

Go to solution Solved by Unimaginative Name,

If you get a B250 board, get a 7700 non-k. If you get the 7700k, get a Z270 board. Start there. The 7700k is overclockable but requires an overclockable board. Z270 boards are overclockable and the B250 board does not support overclocking.

Hello, I'm going to buil my first gaming pc. I'm not sure if my motherboard is good enough for gaming and if there are other things that I have to change. (this is a budget build btw)

(Cheap) Motherboard: MSI B250M PRO-VDH

Unless you already bought the 7700k, go for the 8700k and Z370 instead. It is 1.5x performance for a few more dollars.

Ok thx, but what's the difference between a Z270 motherboard and a Z370 motherboard?

Why go for outdated 7700K and the likes when you can get an 8400 or even 8600K and a Z370 board for more performance and equal or lesser cost?

@MisterVince333 The 8600k is currently going for 220 Euro on Amazon.de, and Amazon.co.uk. Makes much more sense than a 7700k for 273 Euro. Same ore faster in games, much better for multithreading.

Z270 supports 6th and 7th gen CPUs. Z370 supports only 8th gen CPUs.

Z270 and Z10 are for the 6000 and 7000 series chips.

Z370 is for the 8000 series chips.

You cannot use a 6000 or 7000 series chip on a 300 series board or vice versa with an 8000 series chip on the 100 or 200 series boards

Yeah, but this is an I5 ... The I7 700k is better, or am I wrong? (proof:

They are about equal with the 8600K having two less threads since the 7700K is a 4core/8thread while the 8600K is 6core/6thread but allows you to upgrade in the future to an 8700K which has 6cores/12threads. So they perform about the same but the 8600K and Z370 gives you an upgrade path, the other doesn't, and it allows you to get an overclocking board into the same budget.

Couldn't find the exact GPU or monitor so I put in placeholders but it's pretty close to what you had:

At stock clocks the 7700k is faster in some games because of the higher base clock speed. The 8600k will be better for future games, and will match the 7700k at the same clock speeds. There's no point getting a K series CPU if you don't overclock.

The extra threads on the 7700k are meaningless, since hyperthreading is significantly slower than having real physical cores. http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/intel-core-i5-8600k-processor-review,7.html

Thanks man, so do you think that I can get a better framerate with an overclocked i5 8600 then with a non-overclocked I7 7700?

Final question: is this ok? and do you have  any suggestions?

For sure.

For 1-4 threads, an 8600k @ 4.2Ghz will be the same as a 7700k @4.2GHz

For more than 4 threads an 8600k will beat a 7700k even at stock speeds.

Older games (like GTA V) don't really use more than 4 threads effectively, but newer games will, making the 8600k a better option for the future.

So this is perfect, right?

It looks good to me. Only one thing I would say is you could spend an extra 15-20 on a better CPU cooler to bring it up to the price you had originally. Would also help you get a little more out of that 8600k :)
