How Long Are Photos Saved?

If I upload a photo to Facebook, LTT forum, Imgur, or any other service that hosts pictures and delete it how long does it exist in their backups. I assume some places like facebook might be forever and others maybe after a year as it would be costly but I don't really know. Also the same goes to Youtube. If I upload a video and delete it does it automatically get deleted on their servers?

Just keeping this here as a Don't think they save them as we know them, THey'll prob reduce them to the most compact basic code possible and just store them like that, Don't need to keep them in the current format as it's not like anyone needs to access them quickly.

Some websites might delete them after a period of time, but the really big ones most likely keeps them forever. The vast majority of things uploaded don't get deleted, so the amount of space saved would probably be minuscule. We're talking maybe 1% storage saved. It's most likely worth keeping things rather than deleting them.

Images and videos can not be reduced much more than they already are, because they are already compressed.

 

In the case of sites like Youtube the file you upload often takes up more space than what it did on your drive, because Youtube converts each video into several qualities.

They save them in a sort of "cold" storage which is accessible but very slow or they actually cold store them in drives that are then taken offline. Facebook and Google though will store them in the first style where after a period of inactivity and minimal to no access they'll be stored in storage that's slow to respond and would appear to the user to just take a bit longer to load. There was an article about how facebook managed to store everything but I can't find it right now.

I know someone actually used Blu-rays because it was cheaper. Also most places use tape too

Yah, I think the article mentioned that after a period of like 6 months it was moved to slower drives and then over time migrated to tape or other mediums.

I cant see anyone in their right mind backing up to Bluray for commercial data. Usually backups to other drives then to tape. 

 

But on the topic, there is no reason to not backup data that has been deleted from the live servers as the actually amount of data is minuscule now of days.
