Intel i7 4710HQ runs much slower than it should

TimTomTum

Hey,

I have a XMG C404 Laptop

Windows 10 64bit

Intel i7 4710HQ 2,5Ghz 4cores/8HT

8GB RAM

GTX860M

I am using it for on the road video editing and it shows that it runs only at 60% even when it should be under full load when rendering videos and running CineBech. It actually underperforms dramatically.

I am not very tech savy, but I opened it up and cleaned the fans but that didnt change much.

It always plateaus at exactly 1,59Ghz (63%) and Core Temps tells me an average of about 72°C.

What can I provide to you, so you can help me trouble shoot this?

It is normal for them to power limit when running battery only. Are you plugged in with the battery substantially full at the time of test?

Yes. It is connected to the Powersupply and has 93 percent.

Check windows power settings.

Check GPU settings -- Battery

Disable intel speedstep in BIOS

Set CPU clockspeed to max clockspeed in BIOS

Check that your GPU and other drivers are up to date.

Reset BIOS

Have you added new RAM recently? If so, try removing that stick / those sticks.

Can you try running hwinfo64 and observe while under load? It'll report each CPU core's speed, and below that there is a part that shows if there is limiting going on. Seeing that may give a clue what's happening.

Also as a random thought, check the Windows power plan isn't limiting for some reason.

I will reset Windows do all of the above. I haven't done a fresh install of Win10 for almost 2 years on this device.  Will report back, thank you!

If I disbale speedstep, that will make my CPU always run at full speed, right? If Speedstep turns out to be the problem, how to I proceed?
