Need SAS HBA

Yea a 6gb expander card can be a little pricey, not much of a price difference especially if the original budget was $300+. Slots permitting I'd go with 3 hbas as well. With a 4u case I would hope he's using a full ATX board anyhow. I bought my M1015 couple years ago at what I guess was a peak time, cost me $120 :'(.

I got my M1015's for free :). IBM servers came with them even if you ordered a better one, even when it's a CTO system. HPE only gives you exactly what you ordered, not sure what Lenovo does since I've not had one since that change over.

My HBA that I use in my unRaid server died. I need a replacement HBA that will fit my norco 4220 4u case. It uses internal sff-8087 connectors to the 5 backplanes. I need direct access to the HDD's. What is the best hba card I should get.

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.

An LSI 9240 or any OEM one based off that like an IBM M1015.

What do you think of the highpoint rock 750?

Is every bay filled with SSDs by chance? If not, you can get away with a 9211 which can go for about $60 + a SAS expander for about another $90 or so. The 9211 split into 24 lanes would give each drive 2gb/s if each drive were going full tilt at the same time. Which unless they're all SSDs you'll be just fine.

9211-8i $60

Intel 24port expander $85

Personally I don't like HighPoint, not for any specific reason but I just like to stick with server gear that I use daily. Plus I'd rather get 2 or 3 LSI based HBA than have everything on a single HBA because if that were to fail the whole system would go down, rare but something to think about.

I'd just go with two 9211/H310, cheaper and supports 32 disks and the case in question only has 20.

I thought the 9211 only has 2 sff 8087 ports though? How do you break it out to 5?

Lol yea I just remembered that now, oops ;). I'd still get 3 HBAs anyway, but then I'm not sure how unRAID exactly handles distributing data so might be wasted effort for resiliency if the system can't utilize it.

will this work for you?

I assume not, but if it does drop me a PM as i've got a few i'd do a deal on

Really not supposed to link to any ebay listing that are your own, breaks the no advertising rule. Wouldn't work though as you suspected, he needs internal SAS ports not external and only requires it to be an HBA not a full RAID card.

If you want to sell anything use the Classifieds forum section then link to that post, there are a few requirements to buy/sell in that section though.

Fist off thanks for all the input really appreciate it everyone. Now I ended up going with the HighPoint card. I did this because I know that in the future I’m planning to switch to a much higher capacity enclosure once my data needs exceed 20 drives.

Also I didn’t know intel made their own sas expanders so that’s cool and I’ll probably look into their products for HBAs in the future.

Unfortunately, your right if this card decides to die unexpectedly then the whole array goes down but I don’t see this as much of a problem because if I split all the drives between even to HBAs I’m still going to have to take the server offline to replace it.

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.
