I messed up with the 24-pin connection and now MB is dead

Hello!

I decided to build a new computer, something that I haven't done in many years. The PSU I'm using is a SFX-L POWER 500W from be quiet! which has TWO connectors (20pin and 8pin) from the PSU to the main 24pin connector. My problem is that I rushed the cabling process, and forgot to insert the 8pin (sense wire?) connector. After connecting the P8 (10pin) for the CPU and thinking that everything was fine, I tried to start the machine... This was a disaster because the motherboard's feedback was blinking lights, sparkling noises followed by smoke from the P8 connector on the motherboard.... I tried to power on once more with the remaining 8pin connected with no luck (obviously).

My conclusion is that the motherboard is fried, even though I cant see any physical symptoms. But what about the other components? Could the CPU and RAM be affected by this? I did not install a GPU at that time. Tested the PSU with the classic short wire test and it turned on, but I will test with a multimeter later.

Specs used at that time:

Intel Core i5 8400 2.8 GHz 9MB

MSI Z370I Gaming Pro Carbon AC

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB

Crucial MX500 250GB

be quiet! SFX-L POWER 500W

Only way to know is to try the components in a different machine if able. If not, then its a best guess based on symptoms. its possible that it did damage other components. Really only thing you can do at this point is to try and RMA the board and check once you get a new one.

Dude! That's some serious issues. As @legacy99 said, you should try your components(CPU/RAM) and see if you fried them along with the motherboard. Hopefully CPU/RAM are fine. As you already said, sparkling noises and smoke.. I'm pretty sure the motherboard is pretty dead.

I'm not able to try the components in a different machine, but I will give RMA a try. Fingers crossed!

I can't believe I messed up so badly...

Thanks guys!
