has anyone ever tried replacing a standard two core intel laptop processor with an extreme edition? i have a hp pavilion dm4 2070us with an intel i5-2410m and want to speed it up, could an Intel Quad Core i7-2960XM work? i know that it has the correct socket and it is compatible with the chipset, but is there anything else that could cause issues?

can you physically remove the CPU from the socket?

Other things have to be taken into consideration. Even if it's FPGA and you could replace it, good luck flashing the BIOS so that it recognizes it as a compatible cpu. Not to mention the power delivery and the cooling capacity of the laptop.

Nothing. You'd have to modify the BIOS with the proper microcode for the i7 quad core so it's recognized at all and then make the laptop actually accept the BIOS.

Considering the size of the laptop and how notoriously crap this range of laptops is, I'd not spend a penny on it and save up for something more solid and reliable. The i7 will probably catch fire.

even if you can plug another processors in it, it may not boot, because of the bios limited cpu support for the model.

the way you can "predict" if it will work is to check weather the same laptop series have other model with the new processors you want.

if yes, then the probability it will work is pretty high, but not guaranteed.

I've done this in the past changing a core duo t2400 sony laptop into core 2 duo t7200.

it has the same socket and another model which support the new cpu.

the laptop runs faster and cooler with 64 bit support (which is huge back then).

and it still working today.

ok, imma just go with a compatible i7 instead then

The best i7 it'll take is likely still a dual core, like the 2640M. Wouldn't count on anything quad core as the cooling won't be able to cope with those.

you're in luck, that model support an i7 out of the box, but only dual core / 4 threads, better than nothing...

As stated in here about the bios recognizing the chip that could be a problem. However, there is another solution. Do some research to see if they offered your laptop with an I7 variant. If they did you can just purchase the i7 chip they used and toss it in. Then the bios would have the micro-code and you would have a stronger cpu.

I understand, that was my original plan, I just was hoping to get away with a ridiculously more powerful cpu

I found a 2640m on eBay for cheaper, so I order that since it's just the slightly higher clocked 2620m

If you're adventurous, you can get another cpu that is supported by this chipset :

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/HM65_Express.html

Make sure the TDP is not higher than 35 watt.

Ivy bridge is in the list.

I just got a 2640m off eBay for $35 and plan to use liquid metal

i ordered an i7-2640m it's also 35W TDP, also i plan to use thermal grizzly liquid metal to keep it extra cool

Are you sure your entire cooler is copper? Because you really don't want that stuff to touch anything aluminium ;)
