Do I need a Mac?

I will mainly be doing music creation with electric guitar and synth plugins, as well as drum plugins. I'm building a 1950X Threadripper build, and I'd really love to avoid having to pay for a Mac as well. I'll have an iPad for iOS stuff. If anyone else here makes music, do you use both Mac and PC? In the beginning, I was planning on getting a Mac Pro, and just doing everything on that, but I much prefer building all my own hardware, at least to the degree that it's possible. I'm just starting out, so I don't have a solid idea yet of what programs, plugins, etc...I'll need, so I would greatly appreciate any insight you can provide. Thank you in advance!

Thank you very much, unfortunately, I'm so lacking in knowledge at this stage, I don't know what I'll need. That's pretty much the idea of my post, just trying to get a feel for what I'll need as my skills improve. I may in fact just have a go at buildinga hackintosh.

There’s plenty of options for music creation on the windows side, but you did mention you using an iPad already, and in that case having a Mac would make sense as you are technically in the ecosystem already. However if the apps you use on there have a Windows counterpart then you can use a PC no problem. It’s really up to your personal preference, if you want to use apps like Logic Pro X (especially if you already are/want to try that) or have previous experience with/want to try  windows apps.

Virtual Machines in general have an inherent performance loss (unless you use something like KVM). Possible, but with how graphics dependent macOS is, it just won’t be worth the effort.

I suspect that I'll probably want to use Logic Pro, and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity was a big reason I was considering a Mac Pro. I'll probably just go ahead and build a Hackintosh. Building my own hardware is a big deal to me personally.

Thank you very much for the feedback! I'm planning on running Reaper for music production. I'm hoping that I won't have to buy all the plugins, and VST'sVST's,etc for both Mac and PC

I'll definitely be doing more composing than anything else, and I've always heard Mac was better for music creation. I suspect there's no way around having to build a Hackintosh, however what I was hoping to avoid, was having to buy all the plugins and VST'sVST's for both. That stuff adds up fast. Some of the programs run  $500 and up, especially if you're using Pro Tools, which I plan to avoid like the plague.

We’re on a very fine line here with discussing it but for what you’re trying to do you’ll have to do some research on your parts to see if they’re compatible, I’d HEAVILY suggest checking out http://www.tonymacx86.com for those resources like the build guides, and ask the people there, we cannot discuss it on this forum. You’d definitely be able to find exactly what you’re looking for in terms of specs and known good parts.

Hackingtosh is like trying to install android on an ipad. Proof of concept is there but is is so not usable...

Thank you very much, I understand that I need to tread lightly on the issue, and know very little about what I'm doing at this point. I may in fact make more sense to just buy an authentic Mac Pro later on.

Install Linux or FreeBSD if you want some learning curve and googling on the internet. A hackingtosh is all of that but 100x worse. Imagine lots of things just do not work(App Store, graphics card, and ect) and troubleshooting anything requires you to use a terminal. Chances are you can’t fix any of it because the software simply isn’t design to run on your machine. 

 

You are inexperience so just just follow some easy guide with pre-picked parts and instructions on how to build the machine it is covering. That will make sure you do not pick wrong parts at least like getting a water cooler only to find out it doesn’t fit inside a mini itx.
