So, I have this old computer my kids use. and I'm wondering what would be the best CPU I can use on this motherboard!

Says it's AM3 ready, but how ready?
doesn't AM3 need DDR3?
could I run a Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition on it?

Thanks!

Yep, you could.

AM2 was compatible with AM3+, as long as the mobo manufacturer supported it.

IMC is on motherboard, not CPU, so you could technically throw a DDR4 controller onto a AM2 board and it would work.
