Alright, I'm gonna take a swing at this. Last rumor I heard was that current gen cards are entering "end of life" and nVidia is ending production. That would suggest next gen is gonna be announced next quarter or so. However a) that's just a rumor and b) I think nVidia also announced something about ramping up production to meet demand since mining has been making it impossible to find anything in stock, and that would suggest the opposite, so take that first rumor with a grain of salt. Also, nVidia doesn't tend to release ti variants until months after initial release of an architecture, so the best you could get whenever next gen does come is a 2080. As I'm sure you know, current card prices are highly inflated but slowly trending downward. What you might not know though is that people are expecting nVidia to up their pricing scheme again when next gen releases, which might me good to keep in mind. I think that's all the relevant information I know so with all that in mind, it is my opinion that if you can find a 1080ti for a reasonable price, go with that.

tl;dr no news, use a 1080ti

If you're not even using a 4k monitor then the 1080 will be fine.

1080 Ti can't max out 1080p 144hz in many games, much more in 1440.
