Hello,

I upgraded my pc with the following new specs:

  • Gigabyte Z370M D3H
  • Intel i7 8700K
  • Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 2666 C16
  • reused my MSI GTX1050 Ti

After putting my new pc together and installing a fresh copy of windows, I have had a lot of BSOD's...

I haven't overclocked the CPU nor have I overclocked the ram. At the stock settings, the set of memory DIMMS are giving me a lot of BSOD's.

I have tried the following:

  • Test the DIMMS seperately -> they both seem to be fine when there's only 1 DIMM in the system.
  • Lower the System Memory Multiplier (the auto options sets it to 2133MHz) to 1866MHz -> doesn't seem to make it better, still constant BSODs
  • Enabled XMP with the one profile that my motherboard comes with.. -> still BSOD's

I haven't tried tweaking any voltages because I don't really know much about overclocking RAM.. I was hoping it to work out of the box..

If anyone has any ideas on what I could try to get my system more stable, that would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone has some good learning material on the subject of RAM overclocking/stabilizing, that would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

What does Memtest86+ say when run for a few hours? Lots of errors? If so, dead RAM, test modules individually.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

A) make sure the DIMMs are slotted in slots 1/3 or 2/4.

B) Update BIOS although I do not think that is a problem on Intel CPU.

C) Try exchanging the RAM.

D) If all those steps doesn't work it's either the memory controller on CPU is dead, or the motherboard is not handling your memory very well.

Thank you both for replying.

First of all, my motherboard labels its slots as following:

  • DDR4-4 (Black) (Closest to the CPU)
  • DDR4-2 (Grey)
  • DDR4-3 (Black)
  • DDR4-1 (Grey)

According to the manual, I need to put my 2 DIMMs in either 1/2 or 3/4 (in other words: same colors)

Here's where I'm at:

  • BOTH modules pass one run (took 41 minutes for each module) of the 13 tests in MemTest64 (see the results in the attached files).
  • The system does not post when the DIMMs are slotted 1/2 or 3/4 (which is what I want for dual channel)
  • The system does boot with the DIMMs in slots with different colour, but has stability issues
  • The BIOS is updated to the latest version: Fe5

Any other ideas to get both modules to work in either slots 1/2 or 3/4 are welcome! :-)

Yes in your case, I meant your 1/2 and 3/4.

Are both your RAMs stable when slotted by themselves? If dual channel does not work, my bet is on the Motherboard being broken because it is extremely unlikely for CPU to be broken.

Yes, seperately, they are stable.. Tomorrow, I'll try to test the board with a different set of ram to make sure it's really not the RAM causing the issue.

Thanks for your help and I'll let you know my findings tomorrow ;-)

After a day of more testing, here are the results:

  • my 2 ram modules gave a lot of errors in MemTest86 on a different motherboard as well
  • I've put 2 different, good memory modules in my motherboard and still couldn't get my system to post in a dual channel configuration...

So it seems to me that this is a very unlikely case of two brand new, faulty components..

Is there anything else I could try or am I missing something?
