Need help on deciding GPU or CPU upgrade

Go to solution Solved by NoCster,

Yeah I'll probably just save until GPU/RAM pricing becomes more reasonable, thanks guys!

Having a problem on deciding if I should upgrade my old GPU from a 750 ti to a 1050 ti. Or upgrading my fx 6300 to a better CPU before dropping money on a new GPU.

Specs v

AMD Fx 6300 OC 3.76
EVGA 750ti SC
12gb ram DDR3
120gb Sandisk SSD

1TB WD Black HDD

MSI 970A-G43
Thermaltake TR2 600W

Well the thing is that there isn't really any CPU I would see as worth upgrading to on the FX platform. A 6350 wouldn't make much of a difference and I wouldn't even consider putting an 8350 in that board. So realistically it's either a GPU upgrade or a entire platform upgrade which would also include RAM if you're choosing anything new from AMD or Intel. And that's going to get expensive.

If I do a GPU upgrade my first concern would be how bad the fx 6300 could potentially bottleneck the 1050 ti. My second concern is would I even see a performance boost at all in games that would be more CPU intensive.

I would run GPUz and see what the 750 is doing atm. I expect you could gain performance largely due to the extra ram on the 1050. I don't play many different games so don't have a lot of experience but can say that civ is the only one I've seen really benefit from cpu upgrade.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

You can't even buy GPUs right now anyways

What's your monitor set up? If it's only 1080p 60hz you're mostly fine

What you could do is get an R5 2400G and sell the 750ti, while you don't get any extra GPU performance really, you do get a bit of spare cash. Though RAM pricing sucks right now

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I primarily game at 1080p 75hz

Is it free-sync?

But ya I'd maybe get the APU and sell the 750ti for $60+ easy.

This is just for showing an OC on the 2200G, would recommend any other 4 heat pipe 120mm cooler

So getting a Ryzen 3 2200G along with a compatible mobo with ddr4 ram would be a better option?

You would get a better overall CPU for gaming, but your GPU performance wouldn't change for the most part, which means you could sell the 750ti with the FX 6300 to make that sale easier maybe

No, just don't upgrade atm if you are going that route, I am almost sure that that would be a side grade, not a upgrade in terms of game fps.

RAM/GPU is extremely inflated at the moment, so unless you really have to upgrade that GPU or CPU at the moment, I would hold off until prices start dropping.

The Ryzen chip is certainly more capible for gaming in general

but unless you want to switch to an ITX system without a GPU or something like that, just keep saving and hope RAM prices go down, then maybe switch to a newer platform

I know that the CPU is better, but the Vega 8 inside the 2200G or the Vega 11 inside the 2400G is not better than the 750ti. What I wanted to emphasize was that he would have to upgrade his RAM to DDR4 if he does upgrade to a Ryzen, and RAM prices are not too great at the moment, and is therefore not worth the upgrade for the price you need to pay.

Maybe what I need to be saying is if I were to get a 1050 ti would I be completely wasting my money.

If you get it for a good price, no you would not be wasting your money, but problem is 1050ti is also $100 over the MSRP atm. And there are new Nvidia GPUs right around the corner.

Alright, what would be the minimum price you would pay for a 1050 ti currently?

If you really want to upgrade something right now, then upgrade your CPU. There are great deals on CPU/motherboard combos right now, and the graphics card market is awful

If you're paying current prices it's a waste of money, the 1050ti was worth about $150 or less

If you're looking to buy something at MSRP the RX 570 makes a lot more sense as it was faster than the 1050ti for not much more money generally.

of course new GPUs are coming soonish, should probably just save your money and wait for better GPUs and RAM pricing to do anything.

Your CPU is mostly fine for 60hz gaming
