X99 to Z370

teeejay

Hello,

I have a custom loop in Phanteks Enthoo Primo, the build should be in the signature.

The problem I am dealing with right now is.. I would like to make my build smaller, to put it in Define R6 for instance and while I am at it, I thought, whether I should upgrade or not.

The single-core performance is brutal on 8700K, it is also more meltdown/spectre proof than i7 5930K. The PC would be just for gaming. What do you think?

i'm using a 4930K with a 1070 (X79 based system) and id say its a perfectly capable build for me; i'd still say a x99 based one is even better for gaming; even though our builds were meant for workstation use in their times. I see little reason in going for a new generation when you can still upgrade your current cpu to Broadwell-e (6800k,6900k,6950X etc)

shelling out for a new mobo and cpu going from x99, you wont see much difference.

your build is perfectly capable as is, but really, its down to personal preference and piece of mind.

hope this helps.

My PC (Known as TRX):

—CPU: TR 1900X

—Ram: 16GB Corsair Dom Plats "ROG Edition"

—Graphics: GTX 1080 Ti FTW3

—Motherboard: Asrock X399 Taichi

—Storage: 512GB Sabrent Rocket, 2.5TBs HDD

—CPU Cooling: Cooler Master ML360 TR4 RGB Edition

—Case: Cooler Master Cosmos C700P

—PSU: Corsair AX860

The question you have to ask yourself is do you use the extra PCIE lanes? if you are then stay with your current X99 system or if you really want upgrade you'll have to look at the i9 7900X on X299 if you want a comparable lane layout (5930K has 40 lanes and the 7900X has 44 lanes).

The fact is, I really don't. There are no advantages in SLI nowadays. And I can accomodate 1 GPU and a PCIe sound card easily.

If specter and meltdown are a concern for you I would wait for next gen processors in Q4 2018/Q1 2019 and "just" switch cases for now.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

I meant it in connection with the performance loss. Haswell CPUs are more affected than Skylake+

Even then I'd still wait. X99 is still a solid platform, a upgrade to an 8 core capable of 5.3ghz or more is more compelling than a 6 core capable of 5ghz or more.

Never ever seen a 5960x on normal cooling doing 5.3 lol

Talking about coffee lake (6 cores and 3% hit 5.3ghz on normal cooling) versus cannon or icelake (rumored 8 core that will likely be capable of well above 5.3ghz if past trends remain)

I highly doubt it.
