Upgrading CPU question

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from an i5 6600k to an i7 8700k. I was wondering if I had to/advised to upgrade some other parts or if I could just pop in the new CPU, do a fresh install (something I've been meaning to do) and be on my way?

Currently I'm using:

  • Intel i5 6600k CPU
  • MSI Pro Solution Intel Z170A LGA 1151 DDR4 USB 3.1 ATX Motherboard (Z170A SLI) Mobo
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MH RAM

I feel like this is a stupid question and I'm just overthinking this but I don't want to mess things up. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

You have to upgrade your motherboard to a z370 chipset because of compatibility.

Make sure you have adequate cooling for the 8700K as well as a good power supply. I've heard it can hit 200 watts overclocked to 5GHz.

The RAM and video card should all be fine.

Unfortunately you'd have to upgrade your motherboard,Z170 only supports up to 7700K. You can still reuse your ram,3200Mhz goes well with an 8700K.

As other people pointed out, Z370 mobo. Dont buy the cheapest one, get something more powerful like the Asus Prime-A or Asrock Extreme4 as the power draw can cook weaker power delivery easily.

Good cooler as well.

Tier 3 should be enough, but I'd stick to tier 2 or above because the cooler the better. It's pretty much entirely liquid coolers at tier 1.

Thanks for the info guys, really appreciate it! I'm going straight to T1 on that cooling list and getting a corsair H100i to replace my H60 by them.

Is MSI a good brand for a Mobo? My friend told me about them and I've been using one of theirs for a little over a year and i love it.

Any recommendations on a decent PSU? I think currently I have a 600w one in now.
