Windows key already in use

wag wan G's,

i just swapped from ryzen to a 8700k

and it asked me to re activate windows,

i entered my code and it said it was already in use 

 

I got my key off of kinguin last year for 10 pound do I have to et another one or can I use this one some how ??

 you should be able to just sign into you microsoft account  to activate

You changed the motherboard. The key is still ok but on the ryzen motherboard. As Vernw3 said, in order to use the key on the new Intel platform you have to do a phone activation. Not much of a hustle and you "speak" only with the robot.

To add, if your license of Windows is OEM license, it is locked on the first motherboard it is installed on, and not transferable (hence the lower price).

Only Retail license is transferable.

Select the troubleshoot option and it will guide you through "moving" the key to that build. t will ask you to pic the pc it should be for and then update the hardware profile for that key.

Iv moved oem keys before without issue tho
