I5-6400 replacement

Re-evaluating the options for replacing the I5-6400 in this system with a better chip, cant afford a new motherboard at the same time however this will be getting replaced in the future and I will want to be overclocking so i'm looking at k series chips.

 

From my own research it seems a 6600k is a decent bump in performance for moderate outlay new or little outlay used (£100~), thoughts?

Scratch the idea of getting a 'K' CPU as you most likely don't have a Z170 board, look at either the i7 6700 or 7700 (will require a BIOS update).

i do not want to buy another chip that is a k when i do replace my motherboard though, would rather use the k at stock speeds whilst I get another board sorted

If you will swap mobo eventually, you should be buying 8th gen or Ryzen anyway, so dont bother getting 6/7th gen K sku unless they are really cheap.

Get a locked version if you don't have a Z170 board, again you haven't given enough details about your current rig.

Take it if on or below 150 pounds. Any more then it's time to think about spending the money somewhere else. Keep in mind that it's a bid, so you may not get it at its current marked price

Then just wait a bit and then invest in something like an i5 8400+H310 mobo. That honestly would at highest cost around $250 USD.

 

Just wait a little and upgrade your CPU AND Mobo at the same time, instead of trying to stagger it out.

I second that you should just wait and get a Coffee Lake chip because 6 cores is better than 4 cores.

6th and 7th gen isnt old enough to be good value really. If I were you I would just bear with the 6400 and save up for something else, like 8th gen i5 or Ryzen 5 1600. Keep in mind that each transaction you make, you lose a bit of money.

Kaby Lake is pretty much Skylake with higher factory clock speed to the majority of users. Kaby does add Optane support, but not useful at all.

if i remember correctly Linus stated a 6600k was the maximum he would put into a gaming rig, and that kaby and coffee are just not a big enough gain too warrant upgrading, hence i was looking at 6600k

Just slow down, please you are thinking about upgrading while thinking about upgrading at the same time .This is not the correct way to upgrade I'm afraid, just think about doing one upgrade first then after a while when you have money saved up think about upgrading some more. What I'm seeing here is you want to upgrade but are also thinking about upgrades while you still haven't done your first upgrade and that's just wrong because all you'll do is confuse yourself in what you are doing.

That's saying to people with a 6600k and Z170 mobo in hand already. Otherwise, it's bullxxxx

you dont NEED a Z170 mobo too run that 6600k at its stock speeds, you only need Z170 to overclock it, my current board has the lga 1151 socket so why wouldnt it work at stock speeds (which are still way better than my 6400). Once I am ready too I can get a Z170 board and overclock 

 

I cant get both at the same time, and getting the board first is just stupid as id get ZERO perf gain, at least chip first I can get A boost in performance, and when i get the board another boost from the overclock

But you are spending money on a dead platform... this is why you need to slow down and look at better alternatives when you have some more money saved up.

by the time I can do what your saying (bare in mind its what i've already done as last i looked into this kabylake was couple weeks away) 9th gens will be out and we will repeat this conversation, its gunna be never ending

and it is an OLDER platform, not DEAD, and even the latest newest best thing on the retailer shelf is old by the time its on sale, im glad for the people who can afford too just buy the new platform everytime, i cannot, I also recall Linus PURPOSEFULLY runs his server gear on an older PROVEN setup
