So @Coldphil2 and I were thinking of what would happen if manufacturers like Nvidia and Asus for example, partnered and integrated a GTX 1080 for example into a motherboard. This is a purely theoretical discussion topic, feel free to comment or ignore if you don't like it.

We're both interested in seeing what you all have to think!

like they do in laptops or in a different way?

The obvious answer is no because upgrade-ability and because most computers aren't lacking in space, I don't see why.

Though if something big were to happen and someone were to innovate in a substantial way that could make a GPU replacement and vram replacement more like cpus and ram then I would be down.

So, I don't see why its needed right now except in unique circumstances but if it is accompanied by new game-changing tech then sure, go ahead.

It's possible to have a PCIe bus right on the mainboard (most likely BGA) but it would need its own cooling solution which for a high end chip would be very buiky. The biggest issue is that you can't upgrade it without a rework station so what's the point?

They used to do precisely this! http://www.nvidia.ca/object/main_mobo_gpus.html

There were a number of reasons they stopped.

With modern cards the thermal constraints were pretty insane and the amount of board space you'd be taking up not just for the GPU but also the VRMs and other ultra-high heat parts would be fairly substantial even on an E-ATX board.

The other big problem is that this *drastically* drives up the price of the board, and isn't upgradable. Would you rather buy a $250 board with a seperate card you can upgrade, or a $700 board with your GPU built in?

It would only be viable if it saved a lot of money compared to buying them separately.

But the thing is, the GPU is usually the only thing that's really worth upgrading during a system's lifetime, and while you could theoretically upgrade the motherboard in for one with a newer GPU, you'd probably run into incompatible sockets, RAM, and all sorts.

I much prefer the idea someone else mentioned of having a GPU socket and slots for VRAM on the motherboard, mainly so I could mount a D15 to my GPU B)

my only complaint would be that its too many things that could go wrong all at once.

if my gpu goes bad, i get a new gpu.

if my gpu integrated into my motherboard goes bad, im getting a whole new motherboard, possibly new cpu, and probably end up just getting a standalone gpu after that anyways, not to mention dismantling my entire computer.

I remembered when mobos still have integrated graphics onboard, instead of dedicated/onboard CPUs. The problem is that if they are broken or the users want to upgrade it, they would have to be repaired complicatedly or need to buy another mobo.
