ZeroDawn

Hey all

Im building my first PC but ive worked on fixing PCs, Laptops, Phones etc... but i would like peoples opinions on my part selection for the PC im building.

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz Turbo Boost upto 3.6GHz
Motherboard: MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon

RAM: G. Skill - Flare X Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz

GPU: Asus - GTX 1060 Turbo 6GB

Power Supply: Corsair - RMx 750w 80 Gold+ Fully-Modular

Case: NZXT - H440 (2015) Black/ Black

SSD:  Samsung 960 EVO 250GB or 500GB M.2 SSD

HDD: 2x WD Black 4TB 7200RPM 3.5" 128MB Cache

Have i overkilled on any parts or does this seem like a good build?

I appreciate all opinions and advice, thanks everyone :)

unless you are going to be doing something atypical with the system (from a consumer standpoint), I highly recommend dropping the NVMe storage for a larger SATA based SSD, and just for cable management reasons, highly recommend a M.2 version.

You will never need an X370 mobo for the Ryzen 5 series. You'll barely need it for even Ryzen 7, unless you want the extra ports and all.

8 TB of storage is a lot, unless you are doing something like storing entire 4k movies on your pc it is overkill. i would recommend you to just clean up useless files and programs once in a while since this also makes your pc a little faster. that way you use your hard drive space more efficiently.

so what would you need X370 for if R7 barely needs it? Considering R7 is the top of the line Ryzen desktop CPU they offer in that socket...

Like more storage options. And a little more OC headroom. But not much.

well that's got more to do with VRM design than Chipset. Granted the VRMs on X370 boards are usually better than those found on B350 boards, but that's not a guarantee. If you want good VRMs, i wouldn't buy a MSI board.

reason im getting 2 4TB HDDs is coz my dad gets me to back everything of his up and ive got a large collection of movies and anime and my current 4TB external HDD is almost full. if it was only me needing the storage i would go with just 1 but i need that extra room sadly but hes paying for his

I would go with a  B350 board as you don't need a x370 (unless you plan on doing SLI)

Also ZEN 2nd gen comes out February 12th with the 2400g and the 2200g, the rest follow in April, so it might be worth waiting

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

reason i was going with the X370 was for the extra ports, would of went B350 but i needed those extra SATA and USB ports because 80% of the time ill have 8-9 USB ports in use and was thinking about SLI in the future, for the CPU a friend bought it for me at the end of the year so yeah but i did have future upgrades in mind

Looks like a good build! Personally on more budget oriented builds I'd go with a larger SATA SSD over an NVME drive.

What makes you want to go with the WD Black drives? If it's just for mass storage I'd get something else, as these can be quite loud.

You can get away with a 550w PSU, 750w is a lot higher than your system will ever utilize. Maybe drop the extra cash towards a larger SSD?

Welcome to the forum! :)

That's not true, it entirely depends on your needs. X370 can offer more i/o options. It also tends to have better quality capacitors, etc.

Not to mention it generally just looks a whole lot better.

knowing me im wrong on this so please correct me if im wrong but does the NVME drives copy files over faster because thats what i was aiming for because i can transfer over 500GB of files per day and atm the copy speeds just kill me, im somewhat of a library for my friends and family because of all the movies, TV shows and Anime i have. with the PSU i was thinking of SLI in the future and wanted to make sure i had enough power but if 550w is enough even with SLI then thanks ill down grade to 550w :)

January, February, March, April. Likely May for widespread availability.

You also can't assume that it'll be readily available at launch, as has been proven so many times before. ;)

Files to what? If you're going to the HDD, then you're still going to be limited by the speed of the HDD, not the speed of the SSD.

If you're thinking of SLI, don't. Just get a better, single card. Especially if you're not thinking about doing it for a year or two. By then new cards will be out, and even SLI'ing your 1060 will likely be beaten by the x70 of the next generation, or x60 of the one after that.

What....is that?

I dno, the performance difference isn't likely to be that different. It's just a refresh, not a completely new chip.

files from the PC ill be building to external HDDs and even from external HDDs to the PC, as for the 1060 thats the cheapest one ive found in Australia since the 1070s are over $250 more then the 1060 Turbo im looking at and for the SLI that would be in 1-2 years time anyway if i ended up going SLI anyway, i did have future upgrades in mind

You're not going to be storing them all on the NVME drive though, so it's pointless.

Yeah, so I'd just get a 550w. In 2 years you might as well buy the current x60 card, and you'll get a lot better performance. Fewer and fewer companies are working with SLI, and video card are using less, not more power.

I assume it will be exact same performance, but if it can overclock to say 4.5, 4.6? Then were talking about good value. Also with the whole VEGA APU side, I was watching reviews and its actually pretty impressive as it gives people an option for a gaming computer for many esports titles without having to buy a graphics card.

Yeah the APU side is definitely an entirely different argument. I don't think a 500mhz bump would be that great. I mean, you're going to be spending more on the chip what with the price drops we saw, and that price difference might afford you a step up video card which would be a better choice.

So I see no downside. The pricing I have seen is actually cheaper then the current counterparts of the APU's they have showcased so far. Assuming Ryzen goes down in cost again when Ryzen + releases, your still going to be able to get either a better optimized, overclockable APU for less then current Ryzen pricing, or if you don't want it, you can then by Ryzen at an even more reduced price. I honestly hope Intel has some stuff up their sleeves, because I always this but I am no fanboy, I want options on both sides.
