Coil whine a worry?

Yatin

Hey guys,

I have got a Bitfenix 650W Whisper M PSU which is unbearable when idle due to the coil whine. But when the fans spin up/ under load, there is no coil whine. It is under load 24x7 because it is in a mining rig. Is the coil whine something to worry about or is it normal?

Thank you

Seeing as its is a high qualityn highly rated 80plus gold psu, I would say no. Coil whine is normal in many electronics including PSUs Graphics Cards, and the iphone 7 lol.

Coil whine isn't an indication of a failing unit or poor quality.  It's just a matter of magnetics or a film capacitor vibrating at an audible frequency.

What I'd be more concerned with is melting your modular connectors due to mining. :D

It's not damaging in any mean but annoying. If it's not a budget psu, it's not suppose to happen while idling. In my experience it can happen when the psu is in constant load like benchmarking (Mine did).

I have rma'd my corsair cx750m psu because of coil whine while gaming. I don't know about other brand though...
