Hey guys! I've been watching LTT for a few years, and I just decided to join the forum. I have a pc that I build pretty much entirely from spare parts and I want to start doing some major upgrades, I'm starting a new job so I'll have some extra money in the next few weeks. I won't be upgrading all at once instead I'll buy a part or two each paycheck, so I don't exactly have a specific price I want to spend. I use my system for light to medium gaming, web surfing, and school work. I currently use two 1080p monitors and I have a third one hooked up to my laptop. Realistically, my 1050 can handle one monitor with a game and a second one with a browser simultaneously, any more than that and my fps drops like a rock. So, everything will be upgraded, I'm just trying to figure out what to do first, yeah I know my setup really sucks but I paid less than $200 (US) for the entire thing. One other thing, I want to stick with DDR3 because I already have 16 gigs and I don't really want to pay for ram twice, also I would like to get the FX9590. I'm asking for parts recommendations and which things I should upgrade first. I attached my specs and btw the ram isn't faulty, it's just running at half speed because the motherboard is throttling it and I can't change it in the BIOS. Thanks guys :)

don't bother with an FX 9590, hot and power hungry but sucks in performance. sell off the 16gb of ram and see if you can get a ryzen 1600+b350 board instead.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Or with ram prices nowadays he might be better off finding a 4790k

Also make sure to get some memory with the Ryzen upgrade. Or if you can't afford a 1600, get a 1200

Do you know a good place to sell ram? I can try ebay but that seems kinda hit or miss.

you can try gumtree, criagslist or any other used website you can make listings in. if it's too much trouble an i7 4770 or xeon will work too.

I can sell the ram and upgrade to ddr4 or I was thinking about just doubling the amount and just using 32gb ddr3. Would that be a good idea, I know I have to eventually upgrade but I could buy another 16gb for less than the price of 8gb ddr4. I just feel like if I upgraded the board/cpu I would end up just building a new computer, and I guess that's what I wanted to do lol

no point upgrading to 32gb for light gaming, most games don't even use up 8gb of ram rn. just do a CPU+mobo upgrade, ryzen/zen+ or coffeelake if you can sell of the ddr3 or haswell if you can't.

Ok, I do play some battlefield and I know that's not really a AAA title in 2018 and that's the heaviest game I play, I do want to be prepared for BF6 when it drops later this year so that's one of the reasons I want to upgrade. I guess the ram upgrade is more of a convenience thing so if it is important I can definitely do it. Also, I do kinda prefer AMD for their budget pricing but I am definitely willing to go with an i5 or i7

if you want to get something with DDR3 get a X79 board with an i7 4930k if you want a 6 core or a Xeon E5-1680V2 if you want an unlocked 8 core

Haswells seem to be dropping in price so if I got a haswell i7 that might last me a while

Just go for an i7 instead of the FX 9590, haswell/ivy bridge i7s are still pretty good in 2017.

going with haswell will be limiting yourself to 4 cores/8 threads although it isnt a bad option

at this point id go the x79 route with an ivy bridge-e i7 4930k(6/12) or the Xeon E5-1680V2(8/16) that way you can have ryzen performance with the ability to use quad channel memory, if OP can find that exact xeon for cheap he would have a cheap alternative to a r7 1700 considering you can overclock that xeon to 4.5ghz and just get beast performance out of it

I would like a xeon, but the e5 seems a little pricey, the e3 is $100 cheaper and is only 400mhz slower, and I could be wrong but I think I might be able to OC an e3 to 3.5ghz which is what the e5 runs at.

no you cant, that exact xeon is the only xeon on x79 that is unlocked

$200 will get you a i7 4930k and you can get a cheap intel board for $100 both on ebay

Yeah I looked a little closer and apparently I was looking at a xeon e3-1220v3 and it can be overclocked but it's an lga 1150. Which one are you talking about?

im talking about the Xeon E5 1680v2 which is a LGA2011 processor on the x79 chipset
the i7 im also recommending is a LGA2011 processor on x79 as well
