Best thing to do would be look into Bitcoin. Litecoin is very similar but with a different mining algorithm.

This post likely will not help you in anyway, but should start with a basic idea.

1) It's an entire digital economy, there is no easy or quick way to explain.

2) Everything is opensource. For AMD GPU's you can use CGminer. For Nvidia you can use CudaMiner.

CGminer https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

CudaMiner https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=167229.0

Mining is all automatic. You get the mining software, configure it, and let it run.

Learning why Bitcoin is such an amazing and disruptive technology.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Users cannot, and will not securely manage key material. Most users can't and the ones that can, wont.

Ask me about Bitcoin, Litecoin, Crypto-Currencies, and/or Mining them.

Right now, all you need to mine without understanding the concept of mining and Crypto-Currencies would be three things.

1. High end AMD GPU. 7950 is/was the best.

2. CGminer (mining program) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

3. Join a mining pool and point your miner towards your pool worker. Here's a list of pools https://www.litecoinpool.org/pools

Here's a guide for building a dedicated mining rig for Litecoin. http://www.cryptobadger.com/2013/04/build-a-litecoin-mining-rig-hardware/

Here's a comparison guide for various GPU's to see how quickly they can mine. https://litecoin.info/Mining_Hardware_Comparison You can add up how much potential your hardware has and enter it into a calculator http://bitcoinwisdom.com/litecoin/calculator

There are no barriers to entry. Everything is open source and free.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
