For a similar spec laptop, you could get something for significantly less (around $900) with something like the Inspiron 7577. However, you can also get much better products at about the same price range. One example is the Razer Blade which recently went on sale on Amazon for roughly the same price

The Alienware's value (or lack of) really depends on where you end up purchasing it from. Often it makes more sense to buy from a retail store, but sometimes you can get some super discounts buying direct from Dell which also gives you the ability to customize the laptop to your liking instead of buying a stock model.

Some will complain about the Alienware's temperatures but most of those issues have been ironed out now, my 15 R3 for instance has not exhibited any of the overheating issues, and that was even before I undervolted it.

Can you provide links to the specific laptops you're looking at?

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Nice. It's really a toss up between the two all things considered, they're both very similar. Your choice is mostly going to come down to aesthetics, overall performance and above all price. One thing I can say is that if you get a G-Sync panel you lose out on a lot of battery saving on the Alienware as they disable the ability to switch to the iGPU IIRC. Also the 120Hz panel Dell uses is a TN panel with some rather muted colors, but overall it works pretty well. I prefer the IPS panels personally but everyone's eyes are different.

I can't speak for the Asus build quality, as I've never owned an ROG laptop but I can say the Alienware chassis is stiff as hell; heavy and well designed. The keyboard is also very well built for typing or gaming, but isn't a chiclet style which some people prefer, as such the keys are closer together.

That Alienware is built better than the Asus one. Also, avoid Razer laptops, poor internal design, poor QC, poor support.
