The Nexus 7 2012 is a great tablet. It has 4.2.2 and its still smooth. I own this tablet and it is still handling games and applications, and the UI is great without any lags.

find a 2013 one the price is not much more for the performance and responsiveness you get the 2012 had reports of slowing down after long use or over time

I have a 2013 Asus Nexus 7, it's great. I would honestly spend a little more and get the latest version.

Why would you buy an old device if you could buy the newer one? If you can afford an iPad, you can certainly buy a Nexus 7.

If you are between an ipad mini retina and a nexus 7 then it's an obvious nod to the ipad for the better performance, battery life, app library and build quality if you can afford it.

If between the old ipad mini (closer in price to the 7) then definitively get the 7. The first ipad mini was not that great of a tablet. Especially for $300.
