I'm new to water cooling and I was thinking about getting a pair of base R9 290's if I can find them. Star Citizen is just around the corner and it looks like they are leaning toward optimizing it for the Radeon stuff.

I've read a bunch and I guess these things run super hot and super load so I'm going with water cooling....maybe. I have a ton of research to do but if you guys/gals have any advice on who's got the best "how to" stuff out there and who's making the best parts, equipment, etc., I'd appreciate the advice/ info.

One question too, I'm running a H100i in one of my rigs so maybe I could save a few $'s and use it for the cpu. Good idea or bad? I'm using the NZXT Phantom 530 case so there's lots of room and ascetics are not a real big concern, at least not on the inside. Heh, the window will pretty much be out of site when I set it all up.

Thanks, Krash

Star citizen will kill all who oppose it. Including the R9 series and 700 series trust me.

A H100i is good for "only" and I mean only CPU cooling for overclocked or bone stock cooling.

When you talk about say something like a h220, it bridges the beginners gap for starting a progressive watercooling loop before you realise that watercooling is expensive and is worth it. The Radeon graphics cards will run hot without a waterblock but it'll become tamed once you do have a waterblock installed.

Yeah I just wanted to use the H100i for the CPU running at stock....well maybe a small bump. Water cooling gear is wicked expensive and I was hoping to save some coin by using the H100i. But what I really need is references. ie... who's got the best "how to for the complete idiot" blog, posts, you tube stuff, whatever, and if you guys can recommend the best equipment/ manufacturers for H2O cooling. I'm looking for quality, dependable stuff at a reasonable cost.

Someone in another thread said "buy all the parts you want and then look at watercooling. Dont skimp on hardware just to watercool it" which I think is excellent advice.

There is HEAPS of EK stuff around but any of the big manufactures will be fine. EK, Bitspower, Heatkiller, Swiftech, XSPC...

There is a watercooling 101 one guide at the top of the watercooling sub forum, if you haven't read it I suggest you do it is bound to have every questions you want to ask answered in there. If not feel free to come back and ask them.

Really watercooling isn't that hard but once you start its hard to stop going bigger... and bigger... and bigger :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Just want to say thanks for the advice. I've been away for the holidays and just now got back. I checked out dazmode, looks like the place to find what I'll need and I looked at the "how to" stuff in the water cooling 101 guide. It's just what I need so thanks for that too. You guys are pretty great so thanks again and I hope you have a happy New Year.
