Vega 64 underclocks under load

SPG

So I have 2 Vega 64 GPUs in my system in crossfire, every time I play any game what so ever the first GPU underclocks to around 1500mhz which really kills performance and sometimes adds a lot of stutter because of the clocks jumping.

I know it's not a temperature issue because it stays around 40c underload. It's also not a bug with the game because it does this on every game I tried (even Dirt Rally, which supports crossfire really well)

I disabled my overclock to see if it's some odd bug but nope, it underclocks below stock settings as well. I just don't get it because my 2nd GPU goes far beyond what I have it even clocked to (oc it 1770mhz on the core and I see it jump to 1800 sometimes)

Is there anyway to for clocks? it's incredibly annoying seeing these numbers jump all over the place when they shouldn't be doing that under water

Also kinda unrelated but...not, but 3dmark always crashes, doesn't matter what benchmark I select. at first I thought it was an OC issue, but it crashes underclocked as well, so i have no idea.

Windows 10 pro 64 bit

AMD driver 17.12.2

Try raising the power limit. If that doesn't work, you could always just use your second card as the "primary" card :P

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

power limit is set to 50%, 2nd card is already the primary, but that only matters when crossfire is disabled...so that doesn't solve anything

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Spoiler

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

Well its not uncommon to see the second card (under CFX) to actually be utilised a bit less than the primary so it could help make it at least a little less noticeable.

Try undervolting? Considering what we've seen and heard about the power consumption of Vega cards, undervolting can reduce power consumption, allowing the card to not hit the power limit as quickly/at all.

Never really touched the voltage on a GPU before, do you have any resources I can read/watch that might help me with this?

If I can make my 2nd GPU stay at 1800 core and 1150 mem while consuming less power that would be awesome.

Not quite a guide but it suggests what you can do so its at least worth a read.

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/vega-64-overclocking-undervolting-information-guide.18793012/

Article on Vega FE but as the core is the same, it applies here.

https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2990-vega-frontier-edition-undervolt-benchmarks-improve-performance

As you're undervolting, you don't really need to worry about it damaging the hardware as (usually) the worst that may happen is the system crashes/hangs and requires you to restart (+increase voltages) but obviously it still carries a little bit of risk.

Anyway, with undervolting, its all down to trial and error (like overclocking).

I'll play around with it and come back in a few hours to see if it helped. Thanks

So after playing around with it....I'm lost

At first I thought it was going well, first GPU wasn't underclocking anymore, saved the profile and started working on the 2nd, same clocks at a lower voltage

then turned them both on aaaand having the same issue. I'm going to assume it's just a driver issue at this point

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers and/or rolling back to the previous driver?

reinstalled, yes
rolling back, no

I would normally rollback but it's not that big of a deal. I only want crossfire for Deus ex because a single GPU only runs the game at 50fps in the most demanding area maxed out

I'll live and continue to be patient......sometimes I regret getting my Vegas

Ah well, to be honest, I'm surprised that CFX driver issues are creeping back as when I had my dual 290Xs, if there was a CFX profile for the game, it would work perfectly with no noticeable micro-stuttering or really anything.

However, Vega overall has been pretty questionable from what I've seen so... :P

vega came out with no crossfire support then got it a few months late, then AMD broke it again. Deus ex has a profile but it only works in dx11.

Apart of me wishes I got 2 1080tis instead, but the other half of me doesn't want to buy a nvidia card because I don't like their business decisions. People say vote with your wallets, but it's hard to do that when you lack options
