Keeping Mac programs

I bought a 2006 iMac at the local flea market from a guy I know and it has a lot of older programs on it that I'd like to keep. I want to upgrade the machine with a fresh install of Lion (it currently has Leopard) but I don't want to lose all the programs (including their licences). Would it be as easy as copying all the programs to a USB drive and moving them back?

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

You can use time machine to create a full backup of the current system state and copy back applications after you install Lion. 

 

Word of warning, PowerPC applications run on Leopard and Snow Leopard but not on Lion. So verify if they are Intel or Universal binaries at least.

OK, thanks. How do I go about copying back just programs/applications?

You can use a utility for that called Migration Assistant. It's in the /Applications/Utilities folder

Yep. Old to new works, not the other way around. Again, if some of the applications are PowerPC binaries, those won't work on Lion.
