Weird PC behavior (screen going black)

VSTOLL

Hello guys,

This thing happened to me twice this month, one beign today after I left the PC for lunch and came back to it after one hour. The first time happened when I was in front of the PC but reading a book, the PC was idling.

What happened is that the screen went black and all the fans sped up, like what happends on the last moments before shutting down a PC, but it didn't shut down, it just stayed like that until I long pressed the power button to force a restart.

Another thing that I don't know if it is related is that my graphics tablet (Wacom Cintiq 13HD) stops working after idling for 30 minutes or something, forcing me to restart the service on the services.msc or restarting the PC.

And another weird thing is sometimes when I cold boot my PC, right before the Windows load, there are some artifacts on the bottom half of the screen, like an Old TV, but purple.

During use, the PC is totally fine, nothing is running hot, and no weird things happening during load. The PC (apart from the GPU) is 5 months old.

2X 8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX @ 2667MHz

Zotac GTX 970 Stock

1TB WD Blue

120GB Kingston A400 SSD

Corsair CX650 (black label edition)

I suspect that the Windows may have something currupted, am I right?

Thanks!

This happened to my GPU, and it turned out to be dying. I'd try reinstalling Windows, see if that fixes it. If not, RIP GPU.

That sucks. I can't reinstall Windows now because I'm in the middle of a work, I'll try that next week :(

But shouldn't the GPU give any signs of death when under load? In game on in synthetics the GPU acts totally normal and with normal temps.

I really want to wait the new Nvidia series before changing my GPU, I just bought a 4K monitor now and I'm broke.

Try running a stress test. If it artifacts, you're screwed. You could just try reinstalling drivers, but I doubt that'll fix it. I wouldn't wait for Volta, I'd just wait till a 1080TI is a bit cheaper.

Just ran FurMark for 5 minutes, no artifacts or locks, totally normal behavior and the temps were normal also. I'll run it for a longer time later.

Don't you think that a GTX 1180 (or 2080, dunno) will be better than a 1080Ti? Cuz GPU prices in my country are insane. The cheapest GTX 1080 is R$ 2400 (720 dollars) and the cheapest GTX 1080Ti is R$ 3500 (1050 dollars).

I don't game much and I don't know if I will game at 4k in all games (specially the most intense ones), my monitor didn't arrived yet and I want to check out first if the upscaling from 1080p/1440p to 4k is usable and if it's worth investing in a high end card.

4K is dumb IMO. I'd just stick with 1080P or 1440P.

Yeah I know, I bought a 4K monitor because I need more screen, I work with 3D and Photoshop most of the time, and I struggle to fit my references and the thing I'm working on the screen. So, having a 4K monitor I want to know if upscaling is bad enough to justify the investment in a 1080Ti. If upscaling looks fine on the new monitor and my GPU dies, then I'll probablly get a standard 1080 or a 1070. Or wait for the new volta cards.

Maybe try reinstalling the drivers.

Just did that, I'll keep a close eye to see if it will solve the problem
