I received the RMA for my motherboard today, so have only just got chance to boot up my PC with the replacement PSU I received after purchasing one that was dead in the water.

When booted, there is a strange scratchy/whiny sound, almost static sounding at times, that intensifies when my computer is under load, or if I move my mouse.

I have supplied a link to a YouTube video of the sound. Please note, I do not post video's on YouTube so I am in no way attempting to gain views. Once my issue has been solved, the video will be removed. The sound's heard at 15 seconds are when the computer is being stress tested with User Benchmark.

But BE CAREFUL. Only open up a PSU if you know what you're doing, cause you could literally die.

I'm definitely not that brave, I'm just going to remove the PSU and shine a torch into the opening.

yes. It might eventually "whine itself away"

Hopefully they'll honor it. Normally most companies don't but where that seems to be especially bad... Fingers crossed?

RMA that. Don't trust any PSU that sounds that bad.

That sounds like a bad capacitor. Probably an easy fix if you have soldering skills and parts. Pop the top off and look for swollen or busted components. Just don't touch anything.

Managed to get an RMA on the PSU, the manager was a complete arse though. He refused to believe that the PSU was the issue, and stated 'you idiots who tinker with computers think you know what's what and the cause of everything' he stuck to this even after I showed him the video and outlined my fault diagnosing steps. He ended the conversation with 'give this f*&ker a refund to stop him messing about', and then went on to strip me of my consumer rights and tell me that anything else I buy comes without a warranty... it's safe to say I took my custom elsewhere!

I now have an EVGA 650 GQ, from a different shop, and it's working beautifully!

It was a very large electronics retailer, Maplins. Unsure if they are based anywhere else other than the UK, over the past 10 years I have shopped there religiously, mainly due to the knowledge of the staff and the (normally) good customer service. I even decided to remain a customer after a moved 30 miles away from my local store, granted, I will now be using the small, local computer shop for all my parts.

I have sent them a scathing email and definitely will post my experiences on Facebook, it is nothing short of appalling. I guess if he was willing to strip me of my consumer rights, how many other customers has he done the same to?
