Worth buying now, or wait?

Hey, so, I'm up against a wall right now. In January I receive a chunk of money that I've dedicated to buy a new GPU. However, I'm reluctant, as I'm wondering whether I should wait for the new nVidia volta series cards to come, or whether I should just buy a 1070-1080 in Jan. I know there's currently no ETA on the cards, but I'm sceptical as I don't want to buy a card knowing that the series might launch really soon (that would be a real slap in the face). If someone has some insight into the situation recommend whether or not it's worth it to just straight up buy one that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

No one knows what's going to be a good move in january, or right now for that matter.

There's always going to be something new around the corner, if competition heats up we'll see shortened timespans between releases, so whatever comes next from Nvidia *could* be replaced 6 months after leaving you slapped silly.

 

So,  if you need a card, buy now; if you do not; wait. It's pretty straight forward really.

If there's no news on the upcoming Volta cards in January I would just buy in January myself.  Just bought a 1080 a few weeks ago and I'm loving it.

An HD 7970 GHz bought back in like gosh... 2012 I think?

It's a tough call.  I went from a 780 to 1080 and don't regret one bit.  Even if something comes out better next year my 1080 will still be pumping out nice fps for a few more years

You're right, I don't really expect to run ultra forever, but if it would last me a good three years-ish time, I'd be more than content.
