Hey guys, I'm in need of a GPU upgrade.

The reason I'm looking for a new GPU is because my r9 overheats and it doesn't perform that well.

I'm starting to save up money after christmas. My budget is 500€ and will probably purchase it in late January.

I was thinking to buy a 1070 STRIX 8gb, opinions?

What should I go with?

My current setup:

i7 7700k

MSI R9 390 8GB

16GB RAM

Ask when it's time to buy it. Prices change a LOT, a good buy now can be a shitty deal the next week, and surely a month later

What resolution are you going to be playing at?

I am used to playing at 60-120hz full HD like my last build.

I'd like to play with good graphics as well. My current build handles demanding AAA games 60-100+ fps on high graphics. I'd like an upgraded GPU that just doesn't overheat and heat my whole case.

Hm, yeah. As I'm only saving up money right now, maybe I should ask this question after a few weeks.

1440p  with 144Hz should be your target if your going GTX 1070.

That's too optimistic. 1440p 144Hz will need a 1070ti/1080

So I assume you have a full HD monitor that output 120 or 144Hz. I would like to think that GTX 1070 would be enough for your wants. Seriously any 1070 should be ok for it regardless of their brand or model I think.

If you wanna be safer, you can go for GTX 1070ti or GTX 1080 (this might be out of budget I think).

I have a 120hz and a 60hz monitor. I've been looking into 1070 myself, not sure if there are any good alternatives.

I'm not aiming to game in 144hz

Just need a better gpu that can run my current games with a little better fps and without overheating.

If that's the case, I think 1070 should be ok for now. In theory, it should not overheat or heat up your casing.

Card has a problem, but not looking to fix?

Not looking for significantly better performance, but asking for an upgrade?

I'm worried you might spend all that saved up money for no good reason at all.

Whats 500€ today probably won't be 500€ in late January.

Here's my thread, I tried everything to fix it without any solution. It's just very common with the r9 series and my card is old.

If you have any solution for me to fix this, post to that thread. I highly appreciate any help.

Well I have an even older R9 290X that tops at about 72C despite the ambient being 30C, but maybe because its an MSI Lightning.

I see you even tried replacing the paste/cleaning the fins and it did not work. Might be a bad GPU that pulls too much power for the cooler to handle.

In the interim you may try underclocking/undervolting to reduce the heat its producing.

Set core clock to 1000Mhz, power limit to +20%, temp limit to 85C, and unlock core voltage to set it to +0. Reduce core voltage by 5mV (yes into the negative) after every successful session of your most demanding games until it crashes and you have your best undervolt. I have my 290X stable at -50mV for 1000Mhz (rather save my ears as I don't need extra power with framerate limit in RTSS) the limit for your GPU will be different as its a different BIOS and VRAM before considering GPU variance.

No harm giving it a shot.

If I try to set temp limit it just puts power limit down instead. My card doesn't support it.
