If you wan't highly noticeable performance upgrades in most games today you will need to upgrade your monitor. That being said, you will have some good future proofing if you keep your monitor. That is to say one or two years from now you should be able to run games well at 1080p high or ultra assuming current trends persist. I have a 1080p 60hz main display and a gtx 1070, and even that is overkill. however I am hoping this will future proof me at least somewhat. Also, I would get a gtx 1070ti all things being equal as it is a better value than a gtx 1080 in most cases especially if you are willing to overclock.

U can keep your monitor and this time u will be able to max out any game and still have over 60FPS.

If u can upgrade I would highly recommend getting a 144Hz monitor. The benefit of extra FPS is so huge it beats 1440p 60Hz (which is your other upgrade option) IMO.

You don't have to, no, but a 1440p monitor would not only give you more real estate in general tasks, it'll give you a nicer looking picture while gaming. Or, you could get a 144hz monitor if you play a lot of competitive FPS games.

Neither one is necessary, both are niceties.

That's debatable. Some people would simply rather have better looking visuals than faster movement. Not everyone plays FPS games exclusively ;)

When we talk 1080p vs 1440p I would say the visuals are not as enhanced as buttersmooth movement of 144Hz screen in ANY game even on desktop when u browse or move stuff around.

If your argument was talking about 4K vs 144Hz then I would agree.

Clearly you think that. I think the opposite. The OP will have to take a look for himself to come to his own conclusion.

Its always subjective man.  He could also combine the both and get 1440p 144Hz and sacrifice visuals for games in which he prefers the high fps and vice versa.
