Ive successfully installed Plex onto unraid, the site is working locally and remotely.

I cannot find where in the disk i need to upload the media where plex can detect so i can add the media folder?

Basically, where is the plex directory so i can create a media folder and assign it on the website?

Thanks.

Unless it's different in unraid, that's not how it works. You make the dataset on your volume, this is where you put your files. Then in the plex server settings assuming you're using a similar plugin, you point it at that dataset so that it can see it. Then create the libraries in plex as you'll be able to see the folders where you have your media.

I'm unsure of what you meant here.

Here I am trying to add a folder that would contain films, media, etc: http://prntscr.com/hnim41

But I cannot find the folder for any of the things that are displayed on my drive across the network.

See my drive main folders here: http://prntscr.com/hninih

Essentially I'm looking to find the directory of where plex is suggesting the media folder is?

Or in other words, where do I upload my damn films to...

Thanks for the reply.

Yep, it's as I thought. You don't "add" media to plex, what you do is just tell plex where the media is and it scans it and makes a database of the content. You already have the media on your own hard drives, for instance:-

  • On a windows machine it'd be something like c:\media\movies\
  • On freenas something like volumea->media->films (both media and films are datasets contained on the voume a) this is where your movies are currently and where you need plex to monitor so it can see the movies and add any as you add more movies to the folder/dataset.

So with freenas you would have to tell the plugin where the media is, so it shows up so plex can see it, like this below. You can see it now has a folder "films" that it can see. You have to tell the plex plugin where the dataset is.. if that's how unraid works? I don't know for sure, but think it can't be much different as you seem to be in the same position I found myself in when I first started using plex.

If that still doesn't make sense to you, you should visit the plex forums maybe, as if you don't understand the above, then you are missing vital information.

Ok, That all makes sense, thankyou..

As for other users using the plex off my server, how would they go about doing this?

They wouldn't, you would only have one plex server that you would share I presume, so they access the server you already set up with a login on their app/program.

What i mean is, ive created a managed user, named James. Here: http://prntscr.com/hnjmt9

How would this user "login" to my server to access the library remotely?

Because you create your library, and share it with him, he will see all your library once you've shown plex where this content is and it can build the library/database. He will just see it when he is logged in to the plex app.

But the user "James" is one i have created, not his account...

Is this a local only option? As on my local ip to Plex i get this login option: http://prntscr.com/hnjru7

and on the normal plex app i do now.

James, assuming that's the other guy who needs to access the Plex media, has to install the Plex Client onto whatever device he's using.

There are plex clients for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Roku, ChromeCast, AppleTV, most smart TV's, etc. If the device has an app store, such as Roku or Android, you just download the Plex app from the App Store. If you're on Windows, you download the Plex client from the Plex website.

When you launch the app, it will search your local network for a Plex server automatically. Depending on whether you have local authentication enabled (plex server settings), he will either need to sign in using the username and password you created in Plex for "James", or, if local-auth is disabled, no sign in is needed.
